InBody BSM170 Stadiometer

The InBody BSM170 Stadiometer is a height rod: a measuring column with a footplate at the bottom and a sliding head bar at the top. The person steps onto the footplate and the operator brings the head bar down to the crown. Pressing the lock button saves the reading to a digital display. The column reads from 1 ft 2 in. to 6 ft 10 in., pediatric through adult on one instrument. Bluetooth then sends the measured height to a paired InBody analyzer. Ask us which analyzers pair with it, and whether an older one needs a service visit first. The BSM170 runs on batteries and needs no outlet.

An InBody body composition analyzer measures fat, muscle and water by passing a small current through the body, and it needs a height figure before it will produce a result. Without a stadiometer beside it, that figure is typed in from memory, often the number the person being tested last heard read out at a physical. The BSM170 replaces it with a measured one, taken in the room on the day of the test. Battery power means siting the column is a question of floor space beside the analyzer and nothing else. There is no outlet to find and no cable to route across a testing room. Height is the whole of what this device produces. It performs no bioelectrical impedance measurement and returns no body composition values, so it stands beside an analyzer and never in place of one.

What it is for

One Value: How It Is Taken and Where It Goes

This device produces a single measurement and hands it to another machine. Everything that matters about it comes down to how that value is taken, which analyzers will accept it, and how far up and down the column it reaches.

Height Stops Being an Estimate
Height is an input to a body composition test, and a keyed-in figure is only as good as the memory it came from. The BSM170 supplies a measured height to a paired analyzer in place of that keyed-in one. One operator action produces one measured value, and the analyzer starts its calculation from a figure taken in the room that day. Where the same people are retested over months, taking the input the same way every time is the argument for the device.

A Manual Instrument With a Digital Readout
The operating sequence is short: turn on the device, step onto the footplate, bring the head bar down to the person's height, press the lock button to save the reading. The head bar moves by hand and the value is read digitally off the display. The word ultrasonic belongs to a different product in the range, the InBody PUSH 2.0. In practice the BSM170 means one trained pair of hands at the column and a reading that takes seconds.

One Caveat for Analyzers Built Before 2023
The link to an analyzer is Bluetooth, and one caveat comes with it that is worth reading before you raise a purchase order. An InBody 270, 570 or 770 that left the factory before 2023 may require maintenance at InBody's warehouse first. Which current analyzers the column pairs with we confirm with InBody against your serial number, model by model. If the analyzer on your floor predates 2023, settle that question first, because the cost of it lands after the stadiometer arrives.
Pre-2023 units, ask first
From 1 ft 2 in. to 6 ft 10 in.
The column reads from 1 ft 2 in. up to 6 ft 10 in., a span that covers pediatric to adult populations. The bottom of that range matters in a pediatric clinic and a school screening program, where a fixed wall rule and a clipboard is often what the stadiometer replaces. The top of it covers the tall end of an adult athletic population without a stool or a workaround. One column handles both ends, so a mixed-age caseload does not need two instruments.

How the Height Gets Into the Analyzer

From the Footplate to the Analyzer

A short sequence, and the analyzer has a height it did not have to ask anybody for. The steps run turn on, step onto the footplate, bring the head bar down to the crown, then press the lock button. The Bluetooth link puts the figure into the paired analyzer with no cable between the two devices. Because the BSM170 runs on batteries, siting it comes down to floor space beside the analyzer. It measures height and only height, which is why it stands next to a body composition analyzer and never replaces one.

Check Your Analyzer's Build Year First

Pairing is the part of this purchase worth settling first, and two things decide it: the analyzer model on your floor and the year it was built. InBody 270, 570 and 770 units manufactured before 2023 may require maintenance at InBody's warehouse. A service visit and a spell without your analyzer would then sit between the order and the working pair. Send us the serial number of the analyzer you run and we will have its build date and status checked before you commit to anything.

Two InBody Measurement Stations

Both devices sit alongside a body composition analyzer and hand it a value it cannot measure for itself. One measures height, the other measures blood pressure.

Questions

What to Confirm Before You Order a BSM170

Height, and nothing else. The range is 1 ft 2 in. to 6 ft 10 in., which covers pediatric to adult populations. The device performs no bioelectrical impedance measurement and reports no body composition values.
Both names point at the same column. InBody's current US designation carries the B suffix, BSM 170B, and this SKU is sold here as the BSM170. If a purchase order needs the exact designation in writing, ask us before you order and we will have it confirmed with InBody.
Turn on the device, step onto the footplate, adjust the head bar to the person's height, then press the lock button to save the reading. The head bar is moved by hand and the value is read off a digital display, which is the arrangement a manually operated digital stadiometer describes.
The link is Bluetooth, and the height lands in the analyzer without anyone typing it at the screen. Which analyzers the BSM170 pairs with is a question we put to InBody against the serial number of the machine you run, because the answer moves with the model and its build year.
Read this one carefully if you run a used or refurbished analyzer. An InBody 270, 570 or 770 built before 2023 may require maintenance at InBody's warehouse before it will work with the stadiometer. That is a service cost landing after the purchase, and it reaches units that are already out in the field. Send us the serial number of your analyzer and we will get its build date and status checked before you commit.
1 ft 2 in. to 6 ft 10 in. on one column, pediatric to adult. The low end reaches infants and small children, which is what a pediatric clinic or a school screening program needs, and the high end covers the tall end of an adult athletic population. A mixed-age caseload runs on the single instrument.
No. It is a stadiometer, so height is its single output. Weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat and segmental analysis come from the body composition analyzer it pairs with, and the BSM170's job is to give that analyzer a measured height to work from. The two devices are bought together for that reason.
No. Battery operation eliminates the need for outlets or cable management, so the column can go wherever the floor space is and not wherever the socket happens to be. Ask us about batteries when you order and we will confirm what to stock as spares.
No. Ultrasonic describes a separate product in the range, the InBody PUSH 2.0. The BSM170 is the manually operated digital unit: the operator moves the head bar and the column shows the value on its display.
Because a typed figure is whatever the person in front of you remembers. Height is an input the analyzer uses, and the BSM170 supplies a measured one to it in place of a keyed-in one. Where the same people come back for repeat tests over months, having that input taken the same way every time is the whole argument for the device.
