Kyota | Zenyu M338
Kyota's entry massage chair is the Zenyu M338, and at 150 lbs. it is the lightest chair the brand builds. A 4-node back mechanism drives it, which means four rollers move across your back. Eighteen programs sit on a tablet-style controller. TrueFit body scanning measures your back, so the chair sets the rollers to it. Airbag Compression Therapy runs air cells that squeeze and release. One reflexology roller runs under the sole of each foot. Upright it measures 30 in. across the front and 45 in. tall. It fits users from 4 ft 8 in. to 6 ft 2 in. and carries up to 300 lbs.
Weight is where the Zenyu separates from the rest of the line. At 150 lbs. it comes in 24.6 lbs. under the next lightest Kyota, which shows up on a staircase and in a doorway long before it shows up in the room. Kyota never calls the M338 2D, 3D or 4D, which means the four-node count tells you how many rollers there are and nothing about how far they travel. Intelligent Voice Command and Control answers spoken instructions when the tablet is out of arm's length, and the intensity range covers five steps from 3 to 7. Metronome Rocking rocks the chair back and forth, and Weightless Zero Gravity Recline raises the knees to roughly chest height. Zero Wall Space-Saving Technology slides the chair forward on its base as the backrest goes down.
Inside the chair
An entry chair usually gets a back mechanism and very little else. The Zenyu adds body scanning, heat, air and audio around it.
Standard kit
The Zenyu specification is eight items long, which is short for a massage chair and long for one that weighs 150 lbs.
Closer look
Upright the Zenyu runs 57 in. from headrest to footrest with 33 in. of depth. At full recline the length grows to 70 in. while the depth is unchanged, because the base travels forward under the seat as the backrest goes down. The 13 in. of extra length all appears in front of where the chair started.
The Zenyu is driven from a tablet style controller carried on an arm beside the seat. Eighteen auto programs are on it and manual intensity moves across a 3 to 7 range. Intelligent Voice Command and Control answers to speech, so changing a program does not mean sitting up to find the screen. Bluetooth speakers handle your own audio through the session.
Seat depth is 16 in., hip width is 20 in. and shoulder width is 23 in. Those three figures settle fit more precisely than a weight rating does. Hold a tape to your own seated hip and shoulder width before you read anything else here. The rated user runs from 4 ft 8 in. to 6 ft 2 in., the same band written as 56 to 74 in., at up to 300 lbs. Massage coverage on this chair reaches the neck, shoulders, back, arms and feet.
Compare
The Zenyu and the Genki both work from a four-node back mechanism. The Yugana M780 brings a 4D mechanism, triple foot rollers and a second heat zone, and it weighs 66 lbs. more than the Zenyu does.
