Roman Chair / Exercise Bench

WalkingPad MATE-WB1 Roman Chair

Three pads on the WB1 adjust independently — the curl pad, the backrest and the foot anchor. That is what lets one frame cover back extensions, abdominal work and preacher curls instead of doing one of them properly and the other two badly. The curl pad in particular adjusts in height for both preacher curls and back extensions, so the position is set to your torso rather than to an average.

Underneath, the frame is reinforced steel: 50 × 50 mm tube with a 1.5 mm wall, approximately 16 gauge, rated to 880 lb. Under-bench storage holds dumbbells and accessories, so the station stays a station. Assembly takes 15 minutes and the tools are in the box.

The Build

Three adjustments and one frame that does not move.

A Roman chair is only as good as its fit. Every contact point on the WB1 adjusts, and the steel underneath them is specified rather than described.

💪
Adjustable Curl Pad
The curl pad adjusts in height, which is what allows the same pad to serve two jobs: a preacher curl position where your upper arm sits flat, and a back extension position where the pad meets your hips instead of your ribs. Set wrong, both movements move load to the wrong tissue. Set right, the biceps and the posterior chain each get isolated properly.
Preacher Curl & Back Extension
📐
Adjustable Backrest
Multiple incline and decline positions change the angle you work through. Decline loads the abs harder through a longer range for sit-ups; a flatter setting suits controlled back extensions. Being able to change the angle is what keeps the same movement progressing once your first setting stops being hard.

🦶
Adjustable Foot Anchor
Padded and adjustable, the foot anchor holds your legs so you can drive a back extension or an ab movement without your feet slipping out of position. The padding is there for the long sets — pressure across the shins is what ends a set of hyperextensions before the target muscle does.

Reinforced Steel Frame
50 × 50 mm steel tube with a 1.5 mm wall, approximately 16 gauge, rated to 880 lb. On a Roman chair the loads are off-axis — you are hinging and rotating over the frame rather than pressing straight down into it — so the tube gauge is what keeps the base planted when you hold a plate to your chest.

Built For Home Training

Adjustment

Set to your body, not to a factory default

Three points adjust: the curl pad height, the backrest angle and the foot anchor. On a Roman chair that combination is the whole game, because a hip pad two inches too high turns a glute-and-hamstring movement into a lumbar movement. Getting the pad on your hip crease means the hinge happens where it should. The adjustments lock quickly, so two people of different heights can share the bench without a rebuild between sets.

  • Height-adjustable curl pad for preacher curls and back extensions
  • Backrest with multiple incline and decline positions
  • Adjustable, padded foot anchor

Training Range

Back, glutes, abs and arms off one frame

Back extensions load the lower back and glutes through a hinge most home setups have no way to train. Decline sit-ups run the abs through a longer range than the floor allows, with the foot anchor holding you in place so you control the descent rather than fighting to stay on the pad. The preacher curl pad puts your upper arm flat against a fixed surface, which removes the swing that makes standing curls a shoulder exercise. That is four muscle groups on one station.

  • Back extensions for the lower back and glutes
  • Decline abdominal and core work with the foot anchor engaged
  • Preacher curls with the arm supported through the full range

Frame & Padding

880 lb of steel, and somewhere to put the dumbbells

The rating comes from the tube: 50 × 50 mm reinforced steel with a 1.5 mm wall, approximately 16 gauge, rated to 880 lb and specified for home gym or light commercial use. The pads use high-density foam in a multi-layer construction, which holds its shape across a set instead of bottoming out where your hips or elbows press hardest. Under the bench there is storage for dumbbells and small accessories, so the plates you train with live where you train rather than across the room.

  • 50 × 50 mm reinforced steel tube, 1.5 mm wall (approx. 16 gauge)
  • High-density foam in a multi-layer cushion structure
  • Integrated under-bench storage for dumbbells and accessories
