COROS Pace 4 Pro

COROS Pace 4 Pro GPS Sport Watch

The COROS Pace 4 Pro is a GPS running watch with an AMOLED screen, the kind where every pixel makes its own light, so blacks go properly black and the numbers stay crisp. It is built for runners, cyclists, triathletes and gym training. The screen is 1.47 in. across against the Pace 4's 1.2 in. It peaks at 3,500 nits during activities, bright enough to read rather than shade. Sapphire glass covers it, inside a TC4 titanium bezel. It weighs 38 g and sits 11.8 mm off the wrist. One charge gives 60 hours of GPS, or 21 days of ordinary wear. Black, black nylon, white and white nylon.

Navigation runs through a digital dial on the right of the case, which scrolls through menus and presses in to select. Two buttons flank it. Holding the lower one opens voice control, which lets you talk to the watch instead of tapping it. The maps live on the watch itself across 32 GB, with street names, trail names and points of interest.

The Hardware

What COROS Put Inside It

Three things set this watch apart on paper from the rest of the Pace range: the screen, the cover glass over it and how long the battery goes between charges.

01
A 1.47 In. Sapphire AMOLED Panel
The panel is 1.47 in. across and 466 pixels square, which works out at 317 pixels in every inch. A pace figure stays sharp at arm's length. It is an LTPO panel, meaning it can slow itself from 60 refreshes a second down to one when the screen is only showing the time, and spend less battery doing it. Brightness runs from 2 nits for a pre-dawn start up to 3,500 during an activity, which is the number that matters at midday. The screen takes up 61.5 percent of the front of the watch, behind sapphire glass, the harder of the two cover materials COROS uses across the Pace range.
3,500 nits
02
Sixty Hours Of GPS
HIGH mode records 60 hours of GPS, which is two and a half days of continuous tracking, so a training block and the race at the end of it come out of one charge. Leaving the display lit permanently costs a quarter of that, at 45 hours. MAX mode listens to two satellite frequencies at once rather than one, and that is the setting for tall buildings or a steep valley. It gives 40 hours. Off the clock the watch goes 21 days. Thirty minutes on a USB-C charger buys back roughly 10 GPS hours.
21 days daily
03
Maps That Live On The Watch
The maps are held on the watch itself, in 32 GB of storage, and they carry street names, trail names, points of interest and turn-by-turn directions. The named streets are the part that earns its keep: you can work out where you are in a city you have never run in, rather than only following a line back. There is 64 MB of RAM behind them, twice the Pace 4's. Off-course alerts fire when you drift off a route you loaded.
32 GB onboard
04
Voice Control Through The Action Button
There is a speaker and a microphone in the case. Holding the action button lets you talk to the watch instead of hunting for a touchscreen target with wet or gloved hands. The same button single-presses through the data pages, the map and the media controls during an activity, and opens the Control Center the rest of the time. The back button holds for the toolbox, and while you are recording it does whichever job you set it to, Lap or Add Pin.

The Detail Behind The Spec Sheet

The Display

Eleven Fields Without Scrolling

The reason to want a bigger screen is how much you can see without pressing anything. This one holds 11 data fields at once, and a Multi-Data page holds 13, so pace, heart rate, lap split and elevation are all in front of you at the same time. On a 1.2 in. watch you would be scrolling between them mid-rep. The numbers stay legible at that count because there are 317 pixels in every inch of the panel, which is dense enough that small type does not break up.

  • 11 data fields on a page, and 13 on the Multi-Data page
  • 317 pixels in every inch, dense enough that small type holds together
  • The screen is 61.5 percent of the front of the watch
  • Refreshes 60 times a second when you need it, once a second when you do not

The Build

A Titanium Bezel Over Sapphire Glass

Two materials separate this watch from the cheaper ones in the range, and both are the parts you touch. The bezel is TC4 titanium rather than the polymer on the Pace 4 and Pace Pro. The cover is sapphire rather than mineral glass, which is the harder of the two and the reason a watch survives a wall on a turn. It still comes in at 38 g, or 43 g once the band is on, and stands 11.8 mm off the wrist. Controls are split three ways so you are not searching a touchscreen with wet hands: a dial that scrolls and clicks, a back button, and an action button.

  • TC4 titanium bezel, where the Pace 4 and Pace Pro use polymer
  • Sapphire glass, the harder cover the other two do not get
  • 38 g on its own, 43 g on the band, 11.8 mm off the wrist
  • A dial you can work without looking, plus two buttons
  • 22 mm bands: straps from the Pace 4, Pace 3, Pace Pro, Apex 4 42 mm and Apex 2 Pro all fit

Planning

Route It Before You Run It

Building the route is the half people forget. Route Builder draws one for a run, a ride or a trail and pushes it to the watch. You can plan a Sunday long run on a screen the night before rather than improvise it at a junction. Off-course alerts tell you the moment you leave it, which on an unfamiliar trail is the difference between a wrong turn and a wrong hour. Live tracking shares where you are, either on a schedule you set or on demand, and storm, altitude and safety alerts arrive on the same screen.

  • Route Builder plans a run, a ride or a trail and syncs it over
  • Off-course alerts fire the moment you leave the route
  • Live tracking, on a schedule or on demand
  • Storm, altitude and safety alerts
  • Weather for up to five places you save

Questions People Ask About This Watch

A GPS sports watch for running, cycling, triathlon and gym training. It has a 1.47 in. AMOLED touchscreen under sapphire glass, a TC4 titanium bezel, global maps stored on the watch, and a speaker and microphone for voice control. It weighs 38 g and the case is 11.8 mm deep.

Sixty hours of GPS in HIGH mode, or 45 with the display always on. MAX mode, which is the dual-frequency setting and listens on two satellite bands rather than one, records 40 hours, or 30 with the display always on. Away from activities it runs 21 days of daily use, or 7 with the display always on. Charging is over USB-C and takes about an hour and a half from empty. Thirty minutes on the charger returns roughly 10 GPS hours.

Four: black, black nylon, white and white nylon. The band material on the plain black and plain white is not published yet, so ask us before you order if that decides it for you. White nylon is the one that lands later than the rest, in late October.

If it is a 22 mm COROS band, yes. The Pace 4 Pro takes the same 22 mm size as the Pace 4, the Pace 3, the Pace Pro, the Apex 4 in 42 mm and the Apex 2 Pro.

Four things. The display goes from 1.2 in. to 1.47 in. The cover glass goes from mineral to sapphire. The bezel goes from polymer to TC4 titanium. GPS in HIGH mode goes from 41 hours to 60. Weight goes the other way: 43 g on the nylon band against the Pace 4's 32 g.

The Pace Pro has a 1.3 in. AMOLED display behind mineral glass, a polymer bezel, 37 g on its nylon band and 38 GPS hours. The Pace 4 Pro is larger on screen, harder on glass, heavier on the wrist and longer on battery.

It is a training watch before it is a smartwatch, and the specifications COROS has published so far cover sport, navigation and daily wear rather than phone features. If you have set your heart on the white nylon band, that one is not available until late October; the other three colourways are there from launch.

Maps. They are stored on the watch itself in 32 GB of onboard storage, and they carry turn-by-turn directions, points of interest, and street and trail names. Route Builder makes a route for a run, a ride or a trail and syncs it to the watch. Off-course alerts fire if you leave the route.

They run voice control. Holding the action button starts it. The same button has other jobs: during an activity a single press moves between the data pages, the map and the media controls, and in daily mode it opens the Control Center.

A fourth-generation optical heart rate sensor, which reads your pulse by shining light through the skin across five channels. Dual-frequency GPS, which listens on two satellite bands rather than one. A barometer, for air pressure and so for altitude. A 9-axis motion sensor, the part that counts cadence and knows which way you are facing. A thermometer and a multi-thermal temperature sensor. A pulse oximetry (SpO2) sensor, and ECG.

You will need a phone. The workouts, training plans, Route Builder and the training metrics all live in the COROS app, and the watch syncs to it. There is nothing to assemble: pair it, pick a watch face and go. A 22 mm band from another COROS watch is optional and fits.
