Garmin fēnix 9 Pro

Two decisions sit in front of you here, and they are independent. The first is case size. All three Pro sizes are built on a titanium case, which Garmin calls the first titanium fēnix watch case, and each one carries a different panel: 1.3-inch and 416 × 416 at 43 mm, 1.4-inch and 454 × 454 at 47 mm, and 1.5-inch at 466 × 466 on the 51 mm, the largest display in the fēnix 9 family. Smartwatch battery follows the same order at up to 10, 18 and 31 days.

The second decision is connectivity. Every size is sold in a standard version and an inReach version, and the inReach version is a different SKU with its own part number. It adds LTE and satellite coverage for two-way messaging, voice calls without a phone, LiveTrack, Garmin Locate and interactive SOS. There is no way to switch it on later, so pick it at the point of purchase or accept the standard watch.

A titanium case, a panel that grows with the diameter, an optional satellite radio and a battery figure that nearly triples between the smallest and largest case. Everything below is broken out by size, because none of it is one number.

The first titanium fēnix case

Garmin describes this as the first titanium fēnix watch case, and it applies to all three Pro sizes: titanium case and titanium bezel together, behind a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lens, with leakproof inductive metal buttons and Garmin's testing to U.S. military standards for thermal, shock and water resistance. With the silicone band fitted the 47 mm weighs 78 g and the 51 mm weighs 99 g. Garmin's two published sources give the 43 mm a gram apart, so we are not quoting a weight for that size.

Three sizes, three different panels

Unlike the standard fēnix 9, no two Pro sizes share a display. The 43 mm runs a 1.3-inch AMOLED, 33.0 mm across at 416 × 416. The 47 mm runs a 1.4-inch, 35.6 mm across at 454 × 454. The 51 mm runs a 1.5-inch, 38.1 mm across at 466 × 466, which is the largest and highest resolution screen in the range. Garmin's fēnix 9 Pro product page states up to 3,000 nits of brightness.

inReach variants add LTE and satellite coverage for two-way messaging through the Garmin Messenger app, voice calls over LTE without a phone in your pocket, LiveTrack location sharing, Garmin Locate so trusted contacts can poll your last known position, weather forecasts over LTE or satellite, and interactive SOS to the Garmin Response coordination center, which is staffed 24/7. On the Pro every size gets its own display, so the size decision changes more than it does on the standard fēnix 9. Start with wrist circumference, because a band that will not close properly changes what the optical heart rate sensor can read, then weigh screen against battery against grams.

The biggest map in the range lives on the Pro 51 mm

At 38.1 mm and 466 × 466 the Pro 51 mm panel is the largest and densest Garmin puts in a fēnix 9, and mapping is the screen that gains most from both. The mapping data and the routing tools themselves are the same in every Pro size, so this is a question of how much trail you see at once.

The green flashlight setting is one of the small things that separates a Pro from a standard fēnix 9. Green light is what fishing and hunting crews already carry for reading a chart or a map at night without flooding the scene. Four things. A titanium case, where the fēnix 9 has a titanium bezel over a fiber-reinforced polymer case. A green setting on the LED flashlight alongside white and red. A brighter panel, with Garmin quoting a nit figure for the Pro that they do not quote for the fēnix 9, and a larger 1.5-inch, 466 × 466 display on the 51 mm against the fēnix 9 51 mm's 1.4-inch, 454 × 454. And the inReach option with LTE and satellite. Battery is close but not the same: the Pro is rated at up to 10, 18 and 31 days by size against 10, 16 and 29 on the fēnix 9.

The matrix is sparse, so read it before you fall in love with a colour. Only carbon gray DLC titanium with the black and pebble gray silicone bands spans all three sizes. The 43 mm has its own palette: titanium with shell pink and autumn orange, autumn gold titanium with cream and French gray, and titanium with fog gray and dark sandstone. The 47 mm and 51 mm share a different palette: titanium with autumn orange and spark orange, and titanium with graphite and black. None of the 43 mm colours carry over to the larger cases and none of the larger-case colours come down to 43 mm. Two colourways exist only as inReach variants. Autumn gold titanium with the bone leather band is 43 mm inReach and nothing else. Titanium with the walnut leather band is 47 mm inReach and 51 mm inReach and nothing else. There is no standard, non-inReach version of either. Every other colourway is offered in both a standard and an inReach SKU within its own size.

Yes, an inReach plan is required for the messaging, tracking and SOS features to work, and Garmin offers a 30-day trial. One thing worth knowing before you suspend a plan for the off-season: Garmin keeps emergency SOS messaging free for up to 12 months even while the plan is suspended.

No. inReach is a separate SKU with its own part number. The radio hardware is either in the watch you bought or it is absent, and no software update adds it. If satellite messaging is something you might want within the life of the watch, buy the inReach variant at the start; the plan itself can be started, suspended and restarted later.

Garmin publishes one figure for it: activity mode with LTE LiveTrack running, rated at up to 9 hours on the 43 mm, up to 16 hours on the 47 mm and up to 27 hours on the 51 mm. Compare that with normal GPS activity mode on the same cases at up to 18, 32 and 56 hours and you can see roughly half the recording time goes to keeping the connection live. This applies while LiveTrack is broadcasting; the watch's other battery modes are unchanged.

The 51 mm, and on the Pro that step up buys a larger panel as well as a larger case. Pro displays are 1.3-inch (33.0 mm) at 416 × 416 on the 43 mm, 1.4-inch (35.6 mm) at 454 × 454 on the 47 mm, and 1.5-inch (38.1 mm) at 466 × 466 on the 51 mm. That 1.5-inch panel is unique to the Pro 51 mm; the standard fēnix 9 51 mm uses the same 1.4-inch, 454 × 454 panel as its 47 mm.

With the silicone band fitted, the 47 mm is 78 g (56 g case only) and the 51 mm is 99 g (73 g case only). For the 43 mm we are not publishing a figure: Garmin's dealer spec sheet and Garmin's own product page give it one gram apart, and a single gram is not worth guessing at. For context on the model difference, the standard fēnix 9 47 mm is 75 g against the Pro 47 mm's 78 g, and the fēnix 9 51 mm is 91 g against the Pro 51 mm's 99 g. The titanium case adds a few grams at both sizes.

The included silicone bands fit 108–182 mm on the 43 mm, 125–208 mm on the 47 mm and 127–210 mm on the 51 mm. Leather bands fit 108–175 mm, 132–210 mm and 135–213 mm in the same order. Anything below 125 mm means the 43 mm is your only Pro, which is also the size Garmin styles for smaller wrists. Measure with a tape before ordering; band fit is what keeps the optical heart rate sensor in contact.

The case and the bezel are both titanium on all three Pro sizes, and Garmin describes it as the first titanium fēnix watch case. That is the structural difference from the standard fēnix 9, where a titanium bezel and a titanium rear cover sit on a fiber-reinforced polymer case body. The lens is scratch-resistant sapphire crystal on both models.

Garmin's fēnix 9 Pro product page states up to 3,000 nits of brightness. That figure comes from Garmin and appears on the Pro only; the dealer spec sheet quotes no nit figure at all, and no nit figure is published for the standard fēnix 9. We are passing on Garmin's number as Garmin states it and not claiming a measurement of our own.

Yes. The Pro's dimmable LED flashlight gives white, red and green. The standard fēnix 9 gives white and red. Red preserves night vision; green is the colour a lot of night fishing and hunting kit already uses for reading maps and gear without lighting up the whole area.

All Pro sizes use Garmin's QuickFit quarter-turn mount, so bands come off without tools. Garmin's product page states the 43 mm Pro includes a 20 mm QuickFit band. Garmin does not publish a QuickFit width for the 47 mm or 51 mm Pro in the sources we have, so for those two, buy bands listed against that exact case size. We will not quote a width we cannot source.

Garmin's spec sheet lists silicone or leather as band options across all three Pro sizes, and publishes leather wrist ranges for each. In the launch lineup, though, every leather-band SKU is an inReach variant: autumn gold titanium with the bone leather band at 43 mm inReach, and titanium with the walnut leather band at 47 mm and 51 mm inReach. Both ship with a silicone band in the box as well. If you want leather without inReach, you would be fitting an aftermarket QuickFit band to a silicone SKU.

Yes, within Garmin's published limits and identically in all three sizes: a 40 m maximum operating depth, a 10 ATM water rating, a built-in depth sensor, single-gas scuba and apnea dive activities, Nitrox support from 21 to 40 percent oxygen, a 3-axis dive compass, a dive planner, ascent and descent rate indicators, and dive logs that sync to the Garmin Dive app. The leakproof inductive metal buttons are part of how that rating is held.

The Garmin ECG app is not available in all regions and is intended for adults aged 22 years and over. It is capable of recording an ECG similar to a Lead I ECG and detecting the presence of atrial fibrillation or normal sinus rhythm. Check regional availability on Garmin's site before you count on it. Separately, Pulse Ox reports blood oxygen saturation and is not a medical device, is not intended for use in the diagnosis or monitoring of any medical condition, and is not available in all countries. Garmin Elevate wrist heart rate, HRV status, sleep coach, Body Battery and training readiness are on every Pro regardless of size.
