The NOHRD Luxury Indoor Exercise Bike V2 is a wooden-framed indoor bike, hand-made in Nordhorn, Germany, with a touchscreen built into the handlebar. A planetary gear turns a 5.5 kg flywheel at 1:8, so the wheel spins faster than the cranks, and an eddy current brake sets the resistance. Resistance turns continuously on a dial at the front right of the frame, and you never step between numbered levels. The bike stands on less than a square meter of floor and is rated to 200 kg (441 lb). Its frame comes in six woods: Shadow, Oak, Vintage, Club, Cherry and Walnut.

How it works

An eddy current brake works magnetically across a gap, and a planetary gear sits between the cranks and the 5.5 kg wheel.

Eddy Current Brake

An eddy current brake slows the flywheel magnetically, without a pad or a belt contacting it anywhere. There is no friction surface to wear down and no felt pad to replace as a consumable. Resistance is continuously adjustable through the dial at the front right of the frame, so you turn into more load and turn back out of it in a single movement mid-ride.

The flywheel weighs 5.5 kg and sits behind a planetary gear running a drive ratio of 1:8. The gearing lets a light wheel behave like a heavy one, because the wheel is spinning several times faster than the cranks that drive it. The practical result is a bike that keeps turning smoothly through the dead spot at the top and bottom of each pedal stroke.

Handlebar Touchscreen

The touchscreen is embedded in the handlebar itself, with no post clamped in front of it and no bracket to knock loose. It shows training data you can customize, and it connects over Bluetooth using the FTMS fitness machine protocol.

The handlebar is shaped to be held in more than one way: upright with the hands on top for a steady spin, and lower and further forward for a harder effort out of the saddle. The saddle sits on a universal bracket with 30 degrees of saddle angle available. Handlebar and saddle each lock at their own height, with about 21 cm of saddle travel for riders 160 to 200 cm tall.

Yes, at any point after delivery. The universal bracket takes the Brooks leather saddle or the comfort saddle in place of the racing saddle the bike arrives with, and a rider with an inside leg over 100 cm fits the saddle mount XL to the saddle arch for a seat height up to 120 cm. All three are retrofits and none of them is an assembly job.

The bottle holder, the seat back and the toe clips with straps all fit it. The seat back is a saddle extension that suits riding with a laptop tray, and with toe clips fitted you free your feet before stepping off.

Retighten the crank bolts every 10 hours of riding, and check the saddle and handlebar locks before each ride. Under intensive use, inspect the locks, the pedals and the frame fasteners at least every three months. Spare parts are available individually, so a worn piece is replaced without replacing the bike, and the NOHRD Care Set keeps the wood in condition.
