The Osaki Ai Apex Duo 5D+4D is a massage chair at the top of the Osaki line, and it runs two roller units at once. A 5D unit works your neck, shoulders and back. A 4D unit works your glutes and hamstrings. 4D means the rollers vary depth, speed and rhythm as they travel. 5D is a 4D mechanism with one more movement layered on. Here that movement is the heads travelling with you as you shift. A live time body scan reads your position and moves them through the session. Neither unit leaves its station, so one program covers your whole back and seat.

Underneath the two mechanisms sit 46 auto programs, with 5 manual modes and five levels each of intensity, speed and pressure. Forty-six is the largest auto library on any Osaki chair. Sixty-two air cells wrap the chair for a full body air massage. The arm and palm bags are split into three segments that inflate in sequence down the length of your forearm. Four systems decide where the Apex Duo puts pressure and how hard. A 5D upper mechanism sits over a 4D lower one. A body scan keeps running while the massage runs. An armrest sensor reads blood oxygen and heart rate. Underneath all of it is an SL-track that carries both units from your neck to your hamstrings.

A 5D Unit Over a 4D Unit

The upper mechanism is 5D and works your neck, shoulders and back. The lower mechanism is 4D and holds your glutes and the top of your hamstrings. Both run at the same time, so a single auto program covers your neck, your back, your glutes and your hamstrings without either unit leaving its station. Ergonomic SL-Track

The SL-track is the one rail both roller units ride, curving from your neck and shoulders through the lower back and down to your glutes and the top of your hamstrings. It carries on past the point where your spine meets the seat, so a stroke that starts at your neck finishes on the back of your thighs. An S-track is the shorter rail that stops at the lower back and leaves your glutes and hamstrings to the airbags.

Sixty-two air cells cover the parts of your body the two roller units cannot reach, built in multiple layers so the compression arrives across a zone in stages. The arm and palm bags are split into three segments that inflate in sequence, so the squeeze travels down your forearm to the wrist and then the hand as a wave. Below the seat, the calf rest works in an outer rotation kneading motion using 8 airbags and 2 rollers. Each foot gets 4 rollers and 16 airbags, covering the soles, the sides, the backs of the feet and the Achilles tendon. The Heat Switches Separately From the Massage

Heat reaches three zones on the Apex Duo at the same time: your lumbar, both calves and both feet. The footrest sitting under those calves extends automatically by up to 7 in. to meet the length of your leg, which is what carries the chair to a 6 ft 3 in. user. The heat is switched separately from the massage, so you can run any of the 46 auto programs with the three zones on or off. Maximum user weight is 280 lb, and the same footrest travel closes the gap for a shorter user so the sole still meets the foot rollers.

There Is No Arm to Climb Over

Both side panels slide back on a rail at the press of a button, so the way into the chair is level with the seat and there is no arm to climb over. Micro space saving handles the other end of the room problem. The seat slides forward as the backrest drops, so the Apex Duo reaches a full three-stage zero gravity recline with 1 in. of clearance behind it. Upright it measures 33.5 in. wide by 65.7 in. long by 48.5 in. tall, and reclined it measures 33.5 in. by 70.9 in. by 34.6 in. Width holds at 33.5 in. in both positions, so that is the number your doorway has to clear, or 30 in. with the chair taken apart.

The Apex Duo From Fifth Axis to Front Door

Two roller units, working at the same time. The upper unit is 5D and covers your neck, shoulders and back. The lower unit is 4D and covers your glutes and hamstrings. On a chair with a single roller carriage the top of your back and your hamstrings take turns, one waiting while the other is worked.

The heads travelling with you. A 4D mechanism varies depth, speed and rhythm as it moves along the track. The 5D upper unit adds one more movement on top: the heads follow you around the seat while the program runs. A live time body scan carries on reading your position after the program has started and keeps them on the same points. Smart Pressure Sensors handle the other half, adjusting the load under each head as the program runs. The other 5D chair in the Osaki range is the Osaki 5D+4D Kairos Duo, and it spends its fifth movement on something else. There the extra movement is reach, taking the heads further out of the backrest than a 4D roller travels. Same badge on two chairs, two different fifth movements, so compare them on what the movement does and not on the number.
