A session on the Prime starts with how hard the squeeze gets, chosen from four steps between 25 and 100 mmHg, and how long it lasts, chosen from 20, 40 or 60 minutes, or set to run continuously while you carry on with something else. Both are set on the control panel on the boot. The steps are coarse by design: 25, 50, 75 and 100 mmHg, with nothing in between.

Why there are no hoses

Traditional compression boots run off a pump box that sits on the floor with a hose to each leg, and packing that away is the reason most of them stay in one room. The Prime puts the pump inside the boot and the battery in with it. A pair weighs about 6 lb in the Regular size and folds into the drawstring backpack that comes with it. Each battery holds 180 minutes, and the boots keep working with the USB-C cable connected as long as the adapter can supply enough power.

Getting the size right the first time

Size is decided on your outseam, measured from just below the top of your hip bone down to the floor. Take it standing tall with no shoes on. The inseam confirms it and the thigh measurement settles the overlap between Short and Regular, where both sizes cover 34 to 36.5 inches. The rule when you land between two sizes is to size down. The kit itself is short: two connected boots, a drawstring backpack and one long charging cable.

Measure your outseam: stand tall, take your shoes off, and measure from an inch or two below the top of your hip bone down to the floor. Short covers 27 to 36.5 inches, Regular 34 to 41 inches and Long 41 inches and over. Where those overlap, at 34 to 36.5 inches, measure the widest part of your thigh standing: over 26 inches takes you down to Short. If you are between two sizes anywhere else on the chart, size down.

Each boot has its own rechargeable battery and its own pump, and both charge from the 270 cm USB-C cable in the box. Runtime is 180 minutes. The boots can run with the cable connected, switched on or off, though an adapter without enough capacity may not manage both jobs at once.

The insides take a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol solution on a cloth, gently. The outsides take a soft cloth, and both get patted dry and hung up until they are completely dry before the next session.
