Knitted Compression With Vibration

Therabody RecoveryPulse Arm

The Therabody RecoveryPulse Arm is a knitted compression sleeve for the upper arm and elbow, with five small vibration motors built into the garment. The squeeze comes from the fabric itself, so nothing inflates and no pump or hose is involved. Five sizes run from X-Small to X-Large, chosen on the circumference of your bicep, and vibration comes in three patterns: Low, High and Wave. A battery pack the size of a matchbox slides out for charging and runs 45 minutes. The sleeve ships with two charging cables and a pouch. It is HSA/FSA Accepted, with a 1-year limited warranty.

Sizing deserves a minute here, because the five bands overlap on purpose. Measure at the widest point in your biceps with the muscle relaxed. X-Small covers 22 to 26 cm, Small covers 23 to 30, Medium covers 27 to 34, Large covers 31 to 42 and X-Large starts at 40. That means a 25 cm arm falls in two sizes, a 32 cm arm in two, and a 41 cm arm in two. Therabody settles that on experience, not on the tape: if you are in-between sizes and brand new to compression, size up; if you wear compression garments often, size down.

The garment is 70 percent germanium polyester with 30 percent nylon and spandex, and in size M it weighs 193 g (6.8 oz) with the battery in and 168 g (5.9 oz) without. Five QX-Micro Motors sit inside it. The battery pack measures 47 by 52 by 11 mm and charges over USB-C. The controls sit on the pod that also holds the battery. It is HSA/FSA Accepted, with your plan administrator deciding an individual claim, and it carries a 1-year limited warranty.

Key Features

Key features

The knit holds the arm under steady pressure while five motors add movement on one of three patterns.

Compression from the knit itself
No air bladder inflates here and no pump is involved, so there is no pressure figure to quote and nothing to plug in. The squeeze comes from the way the fabric is knitted and from the size you choose, which is why the measurement at the top of your bicep matters more on this product than on anything else in the range.
No air, no pump, no hose
Five QX-Micro Motors
The motors are built into the sleeve and spread across it, so the movement covers the upper arm and the area around the elbow and does not buzz at one point. They are small enough that the garment still rolls up into the pouch it comes with. The battery that drives them lifts out of its own pocket.
5 motors in the garment
Three patterns on the pod
Low and High are steady settings at two strengths. Wave rises and falls across the treatment. All three are chosen on the sleeve itself, and the pattern you pick runs until the battery reaches the end of its 45 minutes.
Low - High - Wave
A battery pack that comes out
The pack is 47 by 52 by 11 mm, roughly matchbox sized, and it slides out of the sleeve for charging over USB-C. In size M the sleeve weighs 193 g with the pack fitted and 168 g without it, so you can feel the difference when it is out. Two cables come in the box, one USB-C to USB-A and one USB-C with an adapter.

How to use it

Sizing

Five bands that deliberately overlap

Take a tape measure to the widest point of your bicep with the muscle relaxed, not flexed, and read the number in centimetres or inches. Expect to land in two sizes at once, because the bands are built to overlap: X-Small and Small share 23 to 26 cm, Medium and Large share 31 to 34 cm, Large and X-Large share 40 to 42 cm. The tie-breaker is your own history with compression clothing, and the rule runs the opposite way to the one on the JetBoots.

  • X-Small: 22-26 cm (8.6-10.2 in)
  • Small: 23-30 cm (9.0-11.8 in)
  • Medium: 27-34 cm (10.6-13.4 in)
  • Large: 31-42 cm (12.2-16.5 in)
  • X-Large: 40 cm and over (15.7 in and over)
  • Where to measure: at the widest point in your biceps with your muscles relaxed
  • In-between sizes and new to compression: size up
  • In-between sizes and used to compression garments: size down

The Controls

One pod and three patterns

Everything is run from the pod on the sleeve. Press to start, press again to move between Low, High and Wave, and the pattern holds until you change it or the charge runs out at 45 minutes. The pod also holds the battery, which lifts out when it needs charging. The garment carries on squeezing whether the motors are running or not, because that pressure comes from the knit and not from the hardware.

  • Controls and battery share one pod on the sleeve
  • Three vibration patterns: Low, High and Wave
  • 45 minutes of runtime per charge
  • Battery pack lifts out of its pocket
  • USB-C to USB-A cable in the box
  • Second USB-C cable and adapter in the box
  • Compression from the knit continues with the motors off

What's Included

The fabric and what arrives in the box

The knit is 70 percent germanium polyester with the remaining 30 percent nylon and spandex, which is where the stretch and the recovery in the fit come from. Four things arrive in the box: the sleeve with its battery pack, a USB-C to USB-A charging cable, a second USB-C cable with an adapter, and a pouch for laundry and travel. In size M the whole thing weighs 193 g with the battery and 168 g without, which is light enough to forget on the arm.

Compare

How it compares

The RecoveryPulse Arm is the compression product in the range that fits an arm, and the only one where the pressure comes from fabric. The two boot models use air and cover the leg from foot to hip.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Four items. The RecoveryPulse Arm sleeve with its battery pack, a USB-C to USB-A charging cable, a second USB-C cable with an adapter and a laundry and travel pouch. The motors are knitted into the sleeve, so there is nothing to attach and nothing sold separately to complete it.
Measure at the widest point in your biceps with your muscles relaxed. X-Small 22-26 cm (8.6-10.2 in), Small 23-30 cm (9.0-11.8 in), Medium 27-34 cm (10.6-13.4 in), Large 31-42 cm (12.2-16.5 in), X-Large 40 cm and over (15.7 in and over). The bands overlap deliberately, so many arms fall in two sizes. The rule for that case is this: "If you're in-between sizes and brand new to compression, we recommend sizing up for the best experience. If you use compression garments often, go ahead and size down."
It fits one upper arm and the area around the elbow, in whichever of the five sizes matches your bicep. It has no air chambers and no mmHg setting, that unit being how an inflating boot measures its squeeze. Pressure here comes from the knit and not from a pump. For a leg you want the JetBoots Prime or JetBoots PRO Plus, which squeeze with air and cover foot to hip.
A removable battery pack of 47 by 52 by 11 mm that slides out of the sleeve and charges over USB-C. Runtime is 45 minutes, which is one session and not an afternoon. Two cables come in the box for it, a USB-C to USB-A and a USB-C with an adapter, so a laptop port or a wall socket both work.
Take the battery pack out of its pocket before the garment goes near water, and use the pouch that comes with it to keep the sleeve away from zips and Velcro in a gym bag. On a knitted compression garment the elastic is what ages: the fit loosens long before anything stops working, and the battery is the part with a finite number of charges in it.
This sleeve is cut for an arm, and the two JetBoots models are the ones that cover a calf, a knee and a thigh. The pressure comes from the knit rather than from air, so there is no mmHg setting to read.
It is HSA/FSA Accepted, which means you can use those funds at checkout, though your plan administrator has the final say on any individual claim. The sleeve carries a 1-year limited warranty from Therabody, and buying through an authorized dealer is what keeps that warranty intact.
