This glossary explains the most common (and most confusing) infrared sauna terms you’ll see while shopping—especially around EMF claims, heater types, and “full spectrum” language.


Infrared Sauna Basics

Infrared Sauna

A sauna that uses infrared heating elements to emit radiant energy that warms your body directly (instead of primarily heating the air like a traditional sauna). This often allows for lower cabin temperatures while still producing a strong sweat.

Traditional Sauna (Finnish / Dry Sauna)

A sauna that heats the air (often with an electric heater or wood stove). Your body warms mainly from the hot air and contact with heated surfaces.

Steam Sauna (Steam Room)

A high-humidity heat environment generated by a steam generator. It feels “wetter” than dry saunas and typically runs at lower temperatures than traditional dry saunas.


Infrared Spectrum & Wavelength Terms

Infrared (IR)

Energy just beyond visible red light on the electromagnetic spectrum. Infrared is commonly described in bands (near, mid, far) based on wavelength.

Near Infrared (NIR)

The shortest infrared wavelengths typically marketed in saunas. Often discussed in the context of skin-level benefits and localized circulation. Some brands use dedicated near-infrared light sources rather than standard far-infrared panels.

Mid Infrared (MIR)

Infrared wavelengths between near and far. Commonly marketed for deeper warming and soft-tissue comfort compared to near-infrared.

Far Infrared (FIR)

The longest wavelengths most commonly used in infrared saunas. FIR panels are the classic “infrared sauna” heater style and are typically associated with deep, comfortable heat and full-body sweating.

Full Spectrum (NIR + MIR + FIR)

A sauna marketed as covering all three infrared bands. This can be achieved by mixing heater types or adding dedicated near-infrared light sources. “Full spectrum” is a marketing term, so it’s important to confirm what hardware is actually included and where it’s placed.

Wavelength (Microns / nm)

Wavelength describes the “type” of infrared energy. Sauna marketing sometimes lists wavelengths in microns (μm) or nanometers (nm). Longer wavelengths are generally associated with far-infrared; shorter wavelengths with near-infrared.


EMF Terms (The Big One for Sauna Shoppers)

EMF (Electromagnetic Fields)

A general term for fields produced by electricity and electronic devices. In saunas, people typically mean the electrical/magnetic fields produced by wiring, controllers, and heating elements during operation.

Low EMF

A term indicating the sauna was designed to reduce EMF compared to typical models. There is no universal “low EMF” standard across the industry—numbers can vary by brand, measurement method, and distance.

Ultra-Low EMF

Another tier suggesting even lower readings than “low EMF.” Always verify: (1) where the readings were taken, (2) the distance from heaters, and (3) whether it’s measuring magnetic fields, electric fields, or both.

Near-Zero EMF

A term implying extremely low readings at the user’s position. Important: EMF values can change dramatically depending on where you test (bench seat vs. directly in front of a heater, for example).

Electric Field (E-Field)

The field created by voltage (even when current is low). Some manufacturers attempt to reduce this with shielding, grounding, and wiring layout.

Magnetic Field (B-Field)

The field created by electrical current flow. Sauna EMF marketing often references magnetic-field measurements because they can be measured in common units like milligauss (mG) or microtesla (μT).

Milligauss (mG) / Microtesla (μT)

Common units used to report magnetic-field strength. (1 μT = 10 mG.) When comparing sauna EMF claims, confirm the distance and location where readings were taken.

Shielding

Materials or construction techniques intended to reduce electric fields and/or magnetic fields (e.g., shielding layers, foil barriers, specialized cable routing). Quality and effectiveness vary.

Grounding

A safety and electrical design practice that can also be used as part of some “low EMF” engineering approaches. (Grounding is not the same as “earthing,” though the terms are sometimes conflated in marketing.)


Heater & Element Terms

Carbon Fiber Heaters (Carbon Panels)

Flat-panel heaters that typically provide broad, even heat distribution. Often marketed as comfortable and efficient. EMF output depends heavily on wiring design and shielding.

Ceramic Heaters

Heaters that often run hotter at the element and can feel more intense. Some designs concentrate heat more than carbon panels. EMF varies by build quality and electrical layout.

Quartz Heaters

A heater style that may heat quickly and feel more direct. “Quartz” can be used in different ways in marketing, so confirm the actual heater construction and what wavelengths it’s intended to deliver.

Halogen Heaters

Sometimes referenced in “light-based” heater discussions. Depending on the product, “halogen” can be used loosely—verify what’s actually installed and how it’s used for sauna heating.

Heater Placement / Coverage

Where the heaters are placed (front, sides, back, under-bench, calf/foot zones) affects comfort and how evenly you heat up. Coverage matters as much as heater type.

Heat-Up Time

How long it takes the sauna to reach operating temperature. This depends on heater wattage, cabin size, insulation, and ambient room temperature.


Wood, Build, and Air Quality Terms

Hemlock

A common sauna wood known for stability and a mild scent. Often used in infrared sauna cabins.

Cedar (Western Red Cedar)

Known for aroma and natural resistance to moisture and pests. Often associated with premium sauna builds. Some buyers prefer low-aroma woods if sensitive to scents.

Basswood

A lighter, low-aroma wood option sometimes used for customers who prefer minimal scent.

VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)

Compounds that can off-gas from glues, finishes, adhesives, and some engineered materials. Many buyers look for low-VOC materials and minimal chemical odors.

Off-Gassing

The release of odors or chemicals from new materials (wood treatments, adhesives, sealants). This often decreases with ventilation and use.

Non-Toxic Glue / Low-Toxicity Materials

Marketing language related to adhesives and construction materials. If this matters to a buyer, look for clear documentation and third-party certifications when available.


Electrical & Installation Terms

Voltage (120V vs 240V)

Many smaller infrared saunas run on standard 120V outlets, while larger units may require 240V. 240V can support higher total wattage for larger cabins and faster heat-up.

Amp Draw (Amperage)

How much electrical current the sauna draws. This affects whether you need a dedicated circuit and what breaker size is required.

Dedicated Circuit

An electrical circuit used by one high-draw device only. Often recommended for larger saunas to prevent tripped breakers and ensure stable performance.

Wattage (Total Power)

Total heater power. Higher wattage can help larger cabins heat more effectively, but design and insulation still matter.

ETL / UL / CSA Certification

Common safety marks indicating the product (or key components) has been evaluated to electrical safety standards. This is often a more meaningful safety indicator than marketing terms alone.


Comfort, Controls & Session Terms

Operating Temperature Range

Infrared saunas often operate at lower cabin temperatures than traditional saunas. The “right” range depends on preference, heater design, and cabin size.

Chromotherapy

Colored lighting features marketed for mood and ambience. This is usually a comfort/wellness add-on rather than a core heating feature.

Red Light Therapy (Add-On)

Some saunas include red/NIR lights. Depending on the product, these may be separate from the heating panels and used as an additional wellness feature.

Ventilation

Air exchange through vents or small fans. Even in infrared saunas, ventilation helps comfort and reduces stuffiness and odors.

Control Panel (Interior/Exterior)

The interface used to adjust time, temperature, lighting, and other features. Some models place controls inside the cabin; others add exterior controls as well.

Speaker / Bluetooth Audio

Entertainment add-ons. Quality varies widely, and many buyers treat this as a bonus rather than a deciding factor.
