Bear Cub Kids Mattress

An 8.5-inch hybrid built specifically for kids — hypoallergenic, fiberglass-free, certified clean.

The Bear Cub is the only mattress in Bear's lineup designed specifically for kids. Built around the priorities parents actually have: hypoallergenic materials, no fiberglass, GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low chemical emissions, and engineered to support a growing body without the price of an adult premium mattress. The construction is a true hybrid — not a thin foam pad, but a real foam-and-coil structure with the support and breathability kids need for years of nightly use.

Three layers do the work. A quilted hypoallergenic cover with cooling Tencel® fibers sits at the top — Tencel is a sustainably sourced fabric known for breathability and its ability to wick moisture away from the body, important for kids who run warm or sweat through the night. Below the cover, cooling gel memory foam contours to a child's body for a comfy hug while the gel beads pull heat away from the surface. A 6-inch core of individually wrapped coils provides the structural support — full-coverage support across the whole mattress so every sleep position is reinforced, and durability that holds up as kids grow.

Available in two sizes (Twin and Full) and two color options for the side trim (Arctic Blue and Salmon), so the bed can match the rest of a kid's room. Same 120-night home trial and limited lifetime warranty as the rest of the Bear lineup. Free shipping. Made in the USA. Today's Parent approved.

The Cub Build

Three systems built around what parents care about.

Hypoallergenic materials, real structural support, and certifications meant to meet the standards healthcare facilities and schools use for children's products.

🌿
Tencel® Hypoallergenic Cover
A quilted hypoallergenic cover woven with cooling Tencel® fibers. Tencel is a sustainably sourced fiber known for high breathability, moisture wicking, and a soft surface feel — important for kids who tend to run warm and sweat through standard mattress covers. The hypoallergenic construction minimizes allergen exposure for sensitive sleepers.

Cooling Gel Memory Foam
A heat-dispersing gel memory foam comfort layer sits below the cover, layered over a transition foam. The memory foam contours to a kid's body for a soft, cradling feel while the gel beads pull heat away from the contact zones. This is the layer that gives the Cub its "comfy hug" feel while keeping the surface cool through the night.

🏗️
6" Wrapped Coil Support
A 6-inch core of individually wrapped coils provides the real structural support kids' mattresses often skip. Full-coverage coil construction across the whole mattress — every sleep position is reinforced. The coils give the Cub the responsive feel of a real mattress (not a foam pad), with the durability to hold up through years of nightly use as kids age up.

Inside the Build

Three layers, top to bottom.

A real hybrid construction in a kid-friendly profile — not a foam pad, not an oversized adult mattress. Designed specifically for the priorities of children's sleep.

🌿 Layer One

Quilted Hypoallergenic Tencel® Cover

A quilted cover woven with cooling Tencel® fibers — sustainably sourced fabric with high natural breathability and excellent moisture-wicking properties. The hypoallergenic construction minimizes allergen exposure, important for sensitive sleepers and homes with pets, dust, or seasonal allergens. Available with Arctic Blue or Salmon side trim so the mattress can match a child's room aesthetic.

  • Tencel® cooling fibers — high breathability and moisture wicking
  • Hypoallergenic construction — minimizes allergen exposure
  • Two color options for side trim — Arctic Blue and Salmon
  • Soft, breathable surface appropriate for kids

❄️ Layer Two

Cooling Gel Memory Foam + Transition Foam

Two foam layers below the cover. A cooling gel memory foam contours to a kid's body for a soft, cradling feel while gel beads draw heat away from the contact zones. Below it, a transition foam layer dampens motion from the coil core below — important when kids are jumping or shifting positions through the night. Together they provide pressure relief without the trapped-heat penalty traditional memory foam has.

  • Heat-dispersing gel memory foam — soft, contouring feel
  • Transition foam layer — dampens motion from the coils
  • Reduces heat retention typical of low-end memory foam
  • Comfortable for kids who tend to run warm

🏗️ Layer Three

6-Inch Wrapped Coil Support

A 6-inch core of individually wrapped coils across the entire mattress. This is the layer that makes the Cub a real hybrid mattress rather than a kids' foam pad — coils provide structural support that holds up under years of nightly use as kids age up, full-coverage support so every sleep position is reinforced, and the responsive feel of a proper mattress. The wrapped construction also isolates motion, which matters when kids are jumping on the bed.

  • 6" of individually wrapped coils — full-coverage support
  • Reinforces every sleep position — back, side, stomach, sprawled
  • Wrapped construction isolates motion
  • Built to support kids as they grow into and through pre-teen years

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to what most parents ask before ordering the Bear Cub.

The Bear Cub measures 6.8 out of 10 on the firmness scale — medium-firm. The 6" individually wrapped coil core provides deep compression support while the cooling gel memory foam top layer adds the contouring comfort kids need. Medium-firm is generally the recommended firmness for growing children — supportive enough for proper spinal alignment, soft enough to feel comfortable, and the right balance for kids who switch sleep positions through the night.
Yes on all three. Fiberglass: The Cub is 100% fiberglass-free. Bear uses a fabric fire barrier (non-woven hydrated silica, rayon, polyester, and cotton) quilted directly into the panels — no fiberglass sock that can shed if the cover is damaged. Chemicals: GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low chemical emissions. The foams are CertiPUR-US® certified — verified free of formaldehyde, ozone depleters, prohibited phthalates, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. Allergens: The Tencel® cover is hypoallergenic, minimizing exposure for kids with sensitivities to dust, pet dander, and seasonal allergens.
The Cub is purpose-built for kids — Tencel® hypoallergenic cover (vs. Bear Original's Celliant® infrared cover, which is engineered for adult recovery), shorter 8.5" profile (vs. 10" for the Original), color options for kids' rooms, and a slightly firmer feel tuned for growing bodies. Choose the Cub if: you want a kid-specific mattress with the hypoallergenic cover and color options. Choose the Bear Original Twin if: you want the recovery-focused Celliant® cover, the all-foam contouring feel, and don't need the hypoallergenic cover or color trim. Both are GREENGUARD Gold certified and fiberglass-free.
The Cub uses foams that have little to no smell. If anything, you may notice a very slight scent when first unpacking — comparable to a fresh pair of sneakers — that dissipates within a couple of days. The GREENGUARD Gold certification independently verifies low chemical emissions and minimal off-gassing, which is part of why Bear uses GREENGUARD Gold specifically — it's the certification used by many healthcare facilities and schools for children's environments.
Same mattress construction in both colors — the only difference is the side trim color. Arctic Blue is a soft sky-blue accent. Salmon is a warm pink-orange accent. Pick whichever fits the room. Both ship in the same Twin or Full sizes at the same price.
The Cub works on any standard kids' bed frame — platform beds, slatted frames with slats less than 5.5 inches apart, daybeds, bunk beds (top and bottom), and traditional foundations. Works on adjustable bases too. Not compatible: traditional coil box springs (no even support distribution) and frames with widely spaced slats. The 8.5" profile is also low enough to work with most bunk-bed safety rail clearance requirements — measure your bunk's rail height before ordering to confirm.
The Cub is built around a real 6-inch wrapped coil core (not a thin foam pad), which is what determines long-term durability. It's designed to support a child as they grow — the structural support holds up through years of nightly use. Most kids will use the Cub through their growing years and transition to a larger mattress when they hit teen height. Backed by the Bear Limited Lifetime Warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
120 nights of in-home use. Bear requires a 30-night break-in period before initiating a return — standard for foam mattresses, which feel different in the first couple weeks while the body adjusts. After night 30 and before night 120, email returns@bearmattress.com to start a return. Bear arranges pickup at no cost and issues a full refund. Past 120 nights, the limited lifetime warranty kicks in.
Bear mattresses are assembled in the USA from foreign and domestic components, at Bear's facility in Arizona. The Cub is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low chemical emissions, uses CertiPUR-US® certified foam, has a hypoallergenic Tencel® cover, and meets federal mattress flammability regulations (16 CFR 1633 and 1632) without using fiberglass.
