Bear Original Hybrid Mattress

The Bear Original Hybrid is an 11-inch hybrid mattress at the entry point of Bear's coil lineup. It keeps the same Celliant® infrared cover and the same gel swirl memory foam comfort layer. A 6-inch wrapped Ascension coil core replaces the all-foam foundation. The coils add lift, airflow and edge stability that pure-foam beds cannot match. The Original Hybrid is the lowest entry point into Bear's hybrid lineup. PCM cooling is available as an upgrade for hot sleepers. GREENGUARD Gold, CertiPUR-US® and fiberglass-free, with a 120-night home trial.

The build is straightforward, and it runs to six layers. A Celliant® infrared cover sits at the top, woven with mineral-infused fibers. Below, quilt foam and gel-infused swirl memory foam contour to your shoulders and hips while drawing heat away through gel beads. A dynamic transition foam layer dampens motion from the coils below. The 6-inch Ascension coil core is individually wrapped, with reinforced perimeter coils for edge stability, and it provides the structural support and responsive feel that defines hybrid construction. A high-density DuraDense base foam stabilizes the coils.

Firmness measures 6 out of 10 on the scale, medium-firm and slightly softer than the Bear Original's all-foam build. Bear offers an optional Phase Change Material (PCM) cooling upgrade for hot sleepers. It suits value seekers who want hybrid responsiveness without paying up for the Pro Hybrid or Elite Hybrid. Quilted Celliant® Infrared Cover

The top of the Original Hybrid is a quilted cover woven with Celliant fibers, minerals that absorb body heat and re-emit it as infrared energy. Bear knits the mineral blend into the yarn itself, so it does not wash out of the panel.

Quilt Foam with Optional Cooling Layer

A plush quilt foam layer sits directly under the cover and cushions on first contact, above the firmer memory foam. Optional Phase Change Material (PCM) cooling upgrade can be added directly to this layer, which holds the surface up to 4 degrees cooler for up to 12 hours of sleep.

Gel Swirl Memory Foam

This layer is memory foam infused with cooling gel beads. The memory foam does the contouring, and the body settles in without being pushed back up. Gel beads draw heat away from contact points and disperse it laterally so the surface stays cooler. The Original Hybrid gets the contouring of memory foam without the trapped-heat cost.

Layer Four

Dynamic Transition Foam

A buffer layer between the foam comfort system and the wrapped coils below. Its job is to dampen motion transfer from the coil core, so partner movement doesn't read through to your side of the mattress. Without this layer the coil response would feel through the comfort layers, which is a common reason cheap hybrids feel "springy" in a bad way.

6-Inch Ascension Wrapped Coils

The structural core is 6 inches of individually wrapped Ascension coils with reinforced perimeter coils for edge-to-edge stability. Each coil compresses independently, which means motion from one side of the bed doesn't transfer across to the other. The open coil structure creates airflow channels that all-foam construction can't provide, and that is a key reason the Original Hybrid sleeps cooler than the Bear Original.

DuraDense Base Foam

The Ascension coils rest on Bear's DuraDense base foam, a high-density foundation foam that stabilizes the coils above, distributes weight evenly across the support core, and prevents body-shaped impressions that develop in cheaper hybrids over years of use. Bear can back the limited lifetime warranty because of this layer.

The Bear Original is an all-foam mattress with a high-density foam foundation. The Original Hybrid swaps the foundation foam for a 6-inch individually wrapped coil core, while keeping the same Celliant cover, the same gel swirl memory foam and the same comfort feel. What you gain with coils: a more responsive feel that's easier to move on, deeper support, better airflow for cooler sleep, and stronger edge support. What you give up: the close-contouring all-foam feel and the strongest motion isolation. The Original Hybrid is the entry point into Bear's hybrid lineup.
The Pro Hybrid is the next tier up in Bear's hybrid lineup. Coils: the Pro Hybrid uses 8" TitanCore coils with thicker 13.5-gauge spring construction (up to 1,032 in a Queen). The Original Hybrid uses 6" Ascension wrapped coils, which are lighter and less heavy-duty. Comfort layers: the Pro Hybrid has additional cushioning and uses the same gel swirl memory foam. Profile: the Pro Hybrid is 13" tall vs. the Original Hybrid's 11". The Pro Hybrid delivers stronger pressure relief, longer-term durability, and more aggressive cooling. The Original Hybrid is the more accessible entry point.
The Original Hybrid sits at 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, or medium-firm, slightly softer than the Bear Original (6.5-7) and the same as the Pro Hybrid (6). The 6/10 rating reflects the balance between contouring foam comfort layers and the responsive lift of the wrapped coil core. It suits back, side, and combination sleepers. Strict stomach sleepers may prefer the firmer Bear Elite Hybrid in Firm.
PCM stands for Phase Change Material, which is a temperature-regulating substance that absorbs heat as it shifts between physical phases. The PCM upgrade is applied directly to the quilt foam layer, and the surface runs up to 4 degrees cooler for up to 12 hours of sleep. It's worth the upgrade if you're a hot sleeper, live in a warm climate, or share the bed with a partner whose body heat raises the surface temperature. The base Original Hybrid already runs cooler than the all-foam Bear Original thanks to coil airflow; PCM adds active cooling for sleepers who want maximum thermal regulation.
A firm, flat, sturdy foundation. Compatible: a platform bed, a slatted frame with slats spaced less than 5.5 inches apart, a foundation, or an adjustable base. Not compatible: a traditional coil box spring, or any frame with slats spaced wider than 5.5 inches, which may void the warranty. The hybrid construction is fully compatible with adjustable bases for bending positions. The carton does not come with a base, so plan for a platform bed, a close-slatted frame or a foundation.
Best for: shoppers who want the responsive, lifted feel of a hybrid mattress at the most accessible Bear hybrid entry point; sleepers who want better airflow and edge support than all-foam construction provides; couples who need motion isolation; combination sleepers who change positions through the night. Less ideal for: sleepers who want the deep, slow contouring of an all-foam mattress (consider the Bear Original or Pro Foam); strict stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers who want firmer support; hot sleepers who need maximum cooling, since the Pro Hybrid or Elite Ultra Hybrid have stronger cooling systems.
The Original Hybrid comes with 120 nights of in-home use. Bear requires a 30-night break-in period before initiating a return. After night 30 and before night 120, email returns@bearmattress.com to start a return. Bear collects the mattress at no cost and refunds you in full. Once night 120 passes, the limited lifetime warranty takes over for manufacturing defects.

Bear assembles its mattresses in Arizona, in the USA, from foreign and domestic components. The Original Hybrid is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low chemical emissions, uses CertiPUR-US® certified foam (verified free of formaldehyde, ozone depleters, prohibited phthalates, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals), and meets federal mattress flammability regulations (16 CFR 1633 and 1632) without using fiberglass.
