Chattanooga Continuum 2 Channel Electrotherapy System

The Chattanooga Continuum 2 Channel Electrotherapy System is a portable TENS and NMES device that puts both forms of electrical stimulation in one handheld unit. Its two channels run independently in a 1+1 function. One can run a TENS program on one region while the other runs an NMES program somewhere else at the same time. Thirteen preset programs and two custom regimens cover NMES on large and small muscle groups and TENS by body region. Balanced waveforms deliver a strong contraction. At 226.8 g on two AA cells, it travels with the patient. Order the device on its own, or as the kit with a hand switch.

The unit measures 1.26 x 3.3 x 4.5 in. (32 x 84 x 114 mm) with its two AA cells in place, and it carries a belt clip and a built-in, pull-out kickstand. It is an FDA Class II device with a Type BF applied part and an IP22 ingress rating.

Output

How it works

A clinician sets each Continuum treatment by pulse rate, pulse width, treatment time and amplitude, on two channels that work independently.

Output on each channel
Amplitude is set separately on each of the two independent channels, and both are driven from the same keypad and the same pair of AA cells. Output is rated at 100 Vpeak into 1000 ohm and 50 Vpeak into 500 ohm. A peak-voltage output figure does not convert directly to the rating of a stimulator measured in milliamps.
100 Vpeak
Pulse settings on every program
Pulse rate covers 2-150 Hz across all regimens. Pulse width defaults to 300 microseconds and is adjustable from 48 to 400. Waveform is symmetrical or asymmetrical on the NMES side and modulated on the TENS SMP and TENS MOD regimens. Ramp is adjustable on the programs that use it. Treatment time runs 5-60 min or continuous, with a 30 min default that a clinician can override on any program.
48 to 400 microseconds
Preset and custom programs
The NMES side covers large and small muscle groups, with default pulse rates from 35 to 80 Hz and a custom or switch-driven program on each. The TENS side is named for the region: knee, shoulder, back, hand and foot, each defaulting to 100 Hz.
2 customizable
Battery power and operating range
Two AA alkaline or rechargeable NiMH cells, 3.0 V DC +/-10 percent. The unit warns at 2.07 V typical and shuts down at 1.77 V typical, so a tired cell ends a session cleanly. Take the batteries out for extended storage. Operating range is 50 to 104 F (10 to 40 C) and storage is -40 to 158 F (-40 to 70 C). It is built to EN 60601-1, UL 60601-1 and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 601.1, with ETL classification 9900900.

Key features

Independent channel control and customizable programs give clinicians flexibility in choosing treatment settings, in a body small enough to clip to a belt.

Strong contraction
Balanced waveforms deliver muscle stimulation on the NMES programs, symmetrical or asymmetrical.
Hand switch for easy activation
A hand switch starts the switch-driven programs from the hand, without reaching for the keypad.
Belt clip and kickstand
It clips to a belt and stands on a built-in kickstand.
Touch-proof lead wires
A 100 cm lead wire assembly with a touch-proof connection serves each channel.

Programs

Programs and their defaults

Large muscle programs default to 50 Hz or 80 Hz, and the first small muscle program defaults to 35 Hz. On time is 9-12 s on the large muscle programs and 10 s on the small ones. The TENS side has knee, shoulder, back, hand and foot, all defaulting to 100 Hz, plus a fully adjustable custom position that holds whatever you set into it.

  • Pulse rate range 2-150 Hz on every program
  • Treatment time 5-60 min or continuous, 30 min default
  • Pulse width adjustable 48 to 400 microseconds, 300 default
  • Waveform symmetrical or asymmetrical on the NMES regimens

Switches

Switches and electrodes

Two of the programs are built around a switch: the large muscle custom or switch position, and the small muscle custom or remote position. A hand switch ships inside the kit, and the optional alternative is a heel and foot switch, sold separately. The foot switch puts the trigger under the patient's foot, so both of their hands stay free while they move.

  • Hand switch, supplied with the kit
  • Heel and foot switch, optional and sold separately
  • Lead wire assembly, 100 cm, touch-proof connection
  • Dura-Stick Plus self-adhesive electrodes, matched to 5 x 5 cm or 16 cm2 minimum
  • Transport pouch, in the kit

Questions

Frequently asked questions

No. It is a portable two-channel TENS and NMES stimulator that drives electrode pairs. It has no motor and no joint carriage, and it takes no soft-goods patient kit.

Yes. The two channels are independent and carry a 1+1 function, so each channel can run the same program as the other or a different one. Which program goes on which channel is a clinical decision.

9-12 sec on the large muscle positions and 10 sec on the small muscle positions, with ramp adjustable on the programs that use it.

Contraindicated in patients with a demand-type implanted pacemaker or defibrillator, for any transcerebral electrode placement, and for any electrode placement that applies current to the carotid sinus region. For TENS, use is also contraindicated in undiagnosed pain syndromes, until etiology is established. For functional electrical stimulation it adds assisting paraplegic patients into the standing position. Read the manual in full before use.

A two-channel Continuum drives two electrode pairs, which is one region with two pairs or two regions at once. A four-channel handheld such as the VitalStim Plus doubles that to four pairs and carries two sEMG channels for measurement alongside them. The Continuum has no sEMG channel and no third or fourth channel, and the channel count is fixed in the hardware.

No. Electrodes are not part of the Continuum in either configuration. The size to match is a square 5 x 5 cm (2 in. x 2 in.) electrode, or a carbon electrode of at least 16 cm2. Self-adhesive electrodes are single-patient items and come by the box as a repeat order.

The Continuum comes as the device on its own or as the kit with a hand switch. The kit contains the device, a set of two lead wires (pin cables), the hand switch and a transport pouch, along with the user manual and the practical guide. The heel and foot switch triggers stimulation from under the foot on the two switch-driven positions and is sold separately, as are the AA cells.

IP22, alongside a Type BF applied part and an FDA Class II classification. Keep the Continuum dry in use, in transport and in storage, and follow the cleaning method in the manual. The body has no sealed compartment beyond the battery door.

Three years from the initial date of purchase, covering defects in workmanship and materials and excluding accessories. Electrodes, lead wires and the switches are accessories and sit outside that term.
