The Intelect Focus Shockwave Set is a focused extracorporeal shockwave system: the waves are generated electromagnetically in the handpiece and brought to a focal point inside the body, coupled through a water bag on the handpiece head. It is an FDA Class III device, and the set comes with two stand-offs that set how deep that focal point sits.

Six contraindications apply, and each one is a reason to keep the handpiece away from the area: treatment over or near a bone growth center until bone growth is complete; where a malignant disease is known to be present in or near the treatment area; infection in the area to be treated; a patient with a coagulation disorder or taking anti-coagulant medications; a patient with a prosthetic device in the area to be treated; and over ischemic tissue in individuals with vascular disease effects, for example foot ulcers or venous stasis. One precaution travels with that list: patients may experience pain or discomfort during and after treatment, and treatment with analgesics may be appropriate.
