Chattanooga Saunders

Chattanooga Saunders Lumbar Traction Device

The Chattanooga Saunders Lumbar Traction Device is a lumbar home traction device built on a smooth, friction-free surface for consistent, controlled traction. You strap into an upper thoracic harness and a lower pelvic harness, lie on your back on the device, and squeeze a hand pump. The pump drives a pneumatic cylinder that moves the two halves of a split table apart. An easy-to-read gauge shows the force as it builds. A blow-off valve prevents excessive pressure, and it arrives complete in its own carrying case.

The device

How it works

A hand pump makes the force and valves hold its ceiling, so the device needs no motor and no outlet at home.

Valves that cap the force
Pressure relief valves and a blow-off valve limit maximum force to 200 lb (90 kg), the ceiling the hardware holds whatever happens at the pump. The patented pneumatic system is built for accurate, consistent force and leak-free performance, which keeps the gauge reading true over a course of daily sessions.
200 lb max
Split table on a friction-free surface
The upper and lower halves are separate platforms and the lower half rides on a friction-free track, an actively moving surface that follows the shape of clinic traction.
Split table
A pump that clicks into place
The patented hand pump seats with a simple click-in-place mechanism before the first squeeze, and the easy-to-read pressure gauge on it shows the force at all times.
Gauge on the pump
It packs into a wheeled case
It packs into a carrying case with detachable wheels, so it rolls from room to room and the wheels come off for storage.

How to use it

Pump

Working the hand pump

Squeeze the pump and the gauge climbs with the force; open the valve and the force comes off. The gauge shows the force at every point while a session runs.

  • Easy-to-read pressure gauge on the pump
  • Pressure relief valves and a blow-off valve
  • Click-in-place pump fitting

Position

Lying in the harnesses

Lie on your back on the floor and strap into both harnesses: the upper thoracic harness holds the chest against the top platform and the lower pelvic harness carries the hips on the moving half. Three positions are set from there: lumbar flexion with pillows under the knees, neutral, and extension with rolled towels or wedges under the pelvis.

  • Upper thoracic harness and lower pelvic harness
  • Belt organizer for the straps
  • Lower platform on a friction-free track
  • Used on the floor, in the space of your own length

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Up to 200 lb (90 kg) at the device maximum, held there by pressure relief valves and a blow-off valve.

As guidance, 20 to 40 lb for women and 25 to 40 lb for men, for 8 to 20 minutes a session, 1 to 4 times daily. The shorter window is 8 to 12 minutes, starting daily at the beginning of a course. Static traction is preferred, and intermittent traction holds for at least 60 seconds.

The Saunders Lumbar Traction device, upper and lower harnesses, a hand pump with gauge, a carrying case with wheels, and a belt organizer, with the user's guide.

No. It is self-contained and used on the floor, with no motor, no mains supply and no traction head. The hand pump is the force source and the gauge is the readout.

The non-slip harnesses adjust around the chest and the pelvis, and the Belt Extension Kit lengthens both beyond the range the supplied straps cover. The device is used on the floor, so the room it needs is the length of a person lying on their back.

The upper and lower halves are separate platforms and the lower half rides on a friction-free track, so the lower body is carried on a moving surface while the thorax stays put. That moving surface keeps the motion smooth and consistent from one session to the next.

Use is contraindicated for acute or traumatic injury, rheumatoid arthritis, spinal instability, spinal cord compression, fracture, malignancy, infections and inflammatory diseases. Traction should never cause pain: discontinue the session if pain occurs, and follow the health care provider's recommendations precisely.

The device carries a warranty of one year from date of purchase, covering defects in workmanship and materials.

The upper and lower harness kit (199630), either harness on its own, the lumbar hand pump kit (199633), the belt extension kit (199635), the wheel kit (199634) and a replacement user's guide.

No. This is the lumbar home device. The Saunders Cervical Traction Device with Case is the same hand-pumped idea for the neck, supplied with a shoulder bag, and the Chattanooga Saunders Cervical Traction Device is a clinic accessory that mounts to a powered traction head.

Only had it a little

"Only had it a little over a week. It is seems to be keeping me mobile an the pain is at a minimal. Well worth the purchase. It feels like hospital grade."

— Carol G. (5/5)

Life saver

"I have SI dysfunction as well as herniated lumbar discs. While the instructions don’t get into the detail details, I needed, ChatGPT and my physical therapist were great. Basically I just need the straps lower on my hips and to elevate my knees. ChatGPT also gave me a good schedule to follow for slowly increasing the pounds of tension and length of treatment. It’s pretty light and it fits in the corner of my room perfectly."

— Amanda R. (5/5)
