InBody Dial H40 Smart Body Composition Scale

The InBody Dial H40 Smart Body Composition Scale reads seven named values from one barefoot test, passing a small painless current through you and measuring how strongly the body resists it. Four are primary: Weight, Skeletal Muscle Mass, which is the muscle attached to your bones, Body Fat percentage and BMI. The other three read Visceral Fat Level, Body Balance Evaluation and Leg Muscle Analysis. Visceral fat is the deep fat carried in the abdomen. Those last two report one region at a time, where the primary four cover the whole body. Of the three InBody home scales, only the H40 returns Leg Muscle Analysis.

Underneath that is an 8-point electrode system, with four contacts at the hands and four at the feet. The method is Direct Segmental Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, shortened to DSM-BIA, which means the scale reads your arms, legs and trunk as separate paths. Contacts at both ends of the body are what let it read those regions separately. Triple frequency means the current alternates at three different speeds, and each speed reaches tissue the others do not. Readings move to the InBody App over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with no step on your part. The app handles multi-user recognition, so a second person in the house gets their own history. We stock the InBody Dial H40 in Beige, Black and Green.

How the H40 reads a body

It Never Infers Your Arms From Your Legs

A body composition scale does not weigh fat. It reads how the body resists a small electrical current and works the composition figures out from that resistance. Where the contacts sit and how many frequencies are used decide how finely it can do that, and both are worth understanding before you compare the H40 to anything else.

The Current Runs Hand to Foot
The 8-point electrode system takes four contacts at your feet and four at your hands, so the current has entry and exit points at both ends of your body. Contacts at the top and the bottom are what make direct segmental measurement possible. An arm, a leg and the trunk can each be read as a separate path, and the scale is never left inferring your upper body from your lower one. Direct Segmental Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis is the full name for the method, shortened everywhere to DSM-BIA. It is why the H40 can hand back a value for your legs on their own.
DSM-BIA
Reading at Three Frequencies
A single-frequency scale sends one current through you and gets one impedance reading back. Low frequencies travel mostly around cells, through the water outside them, while higher frequencies pass through cell membranes as well. Each frequency samples a slightly different part of the body's water. The H40 is a triple-frequency device, so it takes three readings where a single-frequency scale takes one. Multi-frequency measurement is the line that separates an InBody Dial from a scale reading at one frequency only.

Four Primary and Three Advanced
Seven named values come off a Dial H40 test. The primary four are Weight, Skeletal Muscle Mass, Body Fat percentage and BMI, and those are the entries on the primary list. The advanced three are Visceral Fat Level, Body Balance Evaluation and Leg Muscle Analysis. Two of those three report on a region of the body. Every one of the seven is filed with its date in the InBody App as soon as the test ends.
7 named outputs
Multi-User Recognition and Automatic Sync
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both built in and the transfer runs on its own, so a finished reading is in the InBody App before you have dried your feet. The app carries multi-user recognition, which keeps a second and third person in the house on their own histories without anybody logging in and out at the scale. Firmware updates arrive through the same connection, and InBody has added metrics to the Dial line that way since launch.

The Two Outputs That Say Where Your Muscle Sits

A single skeletal muscle mass figure tells you how much muscle you carry and says nothing about where you carry it. Leg Muscle Analysis and Body Balance Evaluation are the two outputs on the Dial H40 that answer the second question. Both exist only because the measurement is segmental, which means taken in parts, one region at a time. If you are training one side back to level with the other, those two lines are the ones you will open the app for. The same goes if you spend your season on a bike and want to watch your legs month to month. The other five values will be there as well, and they move on a much longer timescale.

  • Leg Muscle Analysis, an advanced output for the lower body
  • Body Balance Evaluation, an advanced output reported across regions
  • Both come from the 8-point electrode arrangement measuring at the hands and feet
  • Visceral Fat Level completes the advanced list of three
  • Both are reported values, and what a value means for your training is a judgement you and your coach make

The Cheaper Dial Returns More Values

The two Dials divide on depth against breadth, and the price order will mislead you if you let it. The H40 returns seven values, and Leg Muscle Analysis is one that neither the InBody Dial H30 nor the InBody H20N reports. The H30 returns nine, adding Waist-Hip Ratio, InBody Score, Cellular Integrity, Body Fat Mass and Soft Lean Mass, which measures lean tissue once its bone mineral comes out. The H30 also recognizes up to 20 users, and the H40 handles multi-user recognition through the app. Pick the H40 if a value for your legs and a balance reading are what you actually plan to look at. Pick the H30 if you want the longer list of figures and a house full of people on one scale. Whichever colour you take, the H40 carries a one year product warranty, and its specification marks it FSA and HSA eligible. Whether your own plan will reimburse it is a matter for your plan administrator's substantiation rules, so settle that with them before you get to checkout.

  • H40: seven named values, four primary and three advanced
  • H40 only: Leg Muscle Analysis
  • H30 only: Body Fat Mass, Soft Lean Mass, Waist-Hip Ratio, InBody Score, Cellular Integrity
  • Both use an 8-point electrode arrangement at triple frequency
  • Beige, Black and Green stocked here, all three the same scale underneath

Questions

What the Dial H40 Reports and How It Connects

Seven, in two lists. Primary: Weight, Skeletal Muscle Mass, Body Fat percentage and BMI. Advanced: Visceral Fat Level, Body Balance Evaluation and Leg Muscle Analysis. All seven sync to the InBody App at the end of the test and build a dated history there.
Both are region-level outputs on the advanced list. Leg Muscle Analysis reports on the lower body on its own, apart from the whole-body skeletal muscle figure. Body Balance Evaluation reports across regions, which is how a difference between one side and the other shows up as something other than a single average. What either reading means for the way you train is a call for you and a qualified professional.
Segmental means the body is read in parts. Because the H40 takes contacts at the hands as well as the feet, the current has a path through the arms and trunk as well as the legs, and regions can be measured separately. Direct Segmental Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, or DSM-BIA, is the method name. Without contacts at both ends, a scale reads the lower body and estimates the rest.
A single-frequency device sends one current through the body and gets one impedance value back. Lower frequencies travel mainly through the water outside your cells; higher ones cross cell membranes too. A multi-frequency device samples at more than one, so it has more than one view of the same body. The Dial H40 is triple-frequency, which is three.
The H40 returns Leg Muscle Analysis, which the H30 does not. The H30 returns Body Fat Mass, Soft Lean Mass, Waist-Hip Ratio, InBody Score and Cellular Integrity, none of which come off the H40, and it recognizes up to 20 users. Both read at eight points and both run triple-frequency. Body water balance is the H30's figure, and Body Balance Evaluation is the H40's. The dearer model is the one with the shorter list and the deeper reading.
Yes. Multi-user recognition runs through the InBody App, so each person keeps a separate history and nobody has to switch profiles at the scale. If you want a stated user ceiling in writing, the InBody Dial H30 is the model with one, at up to 20 auto-recognized users.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth automatic sync, into the InBody App, which is supported for United States users. The transfer needs no action from you once the test finishes, and firmware updates for the scale come down the same connection.
We stock Beige, Black and Green. All three are the same scale underneath, with the same 8-point electrode system, the same triple-frequency measurement and the same seven outputs.
Treat them as two separate measurements. A professional analyzer such as the InBody 380 or InBody 580 takes impedance readings at named frequencies in kHz, and kHz is the speed at which the current alternates. It reads five body segments with the person standing at fixed hand electrodes, and prints a result sheet at the machine. The Dial H40 is a home scale with its own electrode arrangement and its own list of seven outputs. Compare an H40 reading with your earlier H40 readings.
The Dial H40 measures and reports values, and the InBody App stores them so you can see how they move. Reading anything further into a number is a conversation for you and a qualified professional, and it is one worth having before a figure changes how you train.
