NOHRD Haptik Ball

The NOHRD Haptik Ball is a handheld weighted ball for hand and forearm training, hand-stitched from vegetable-tanned genuine leather and filled with iron granules. It brings play into a workout, with squeezing, holding, throwing and swinging all on the menu in an office, at home or outdoors. Four weights run from 300 g to 2,100 g within 6 cm to 10 cm of diameter, and each step up is felt as mass. Each weight comes in Natural or Black leather, made in Germany, and ships on its own, one ball per package.

Iron granules give the ball its particular feel. A granular fill shifts slightly in the hand as the ball is gripped, held or swung, a different sensation from a solid cast weight of the same mass.

The leather is treated with beeswax, which protects it against sweat and moisture and gives the surface a supple texture that improves with handling. Over time the leather takes on a patina and a richer color, and a ball that has been in use for a year looks different from a new one. Black balls carry the same quality and function as the Natural ones, stitched in black thread throughout.

How it works

Across the range the HaptikBall barely changes size, so moving up a weight loads the same grip with more mass.

The line runs 300 g, 650 g, 1,250 g and 2,100 g, across a diameter range of only 6 cm to 10 cm. The 2,100 g ball is not much bigger in the hand than the 300 g one, and the jump between weights is felt as mass in the same grip width. The step from 300 g to 650 g turns the same movement into a different exercise.

Iron Granule Fill
The fill is iron granules rather than a solid cast core, and the granules set how a HaptikBall feels in the hand. A granular fill moves a little as the ball is squeezed, turned or swung, and the mass shifts under the fingers and never sits dead in the palm. It also lets each of the four weights be hit precisely, because granules can be measured into the shell. The granules are chosen to balance the resistance of the squeeze against the comfort of holding the ball for a while, which gives each weight a squeeze-factor that sits just right in the hand.

Beeswax Leather
The shell is vegetable-tanned genuine leather treated with beeswax for sweat and water resistance. Vegetable tanning is the slower, plant-based process, and it leaves a hide that sits well against skin and develops with handling. The beeswax matters on a ball that spends its working life in a hand, and it leaves the surface supple where an untreated hide would stiffen.

Every ball is stitched by hand, and the stitching is visible around the whole shell. It comes in Natural, where gray thread shows against the leather, and in Black, where black thread is used throughout for a uniform finish. Both colors are available across the full weight range, which means a set of four can be bought in one color.

The Hand Seam

A vegetable-tanned leather shell and an iron granule fill are held together by a hand-stitched seam, the part of a thrown ball that takes the abuse. Check the ball and its seams regularly, and keep it out of reach of children when no one is watching.

Grip Size

Grip and forearm work sit at the center of every HaptikBall session, whatever the weight. At 6 to 10 cm across it closes inside an average hand, so a squeeze runs through its full range, with no pinch around something too wide. Nothing needs setting up, so a ball can live in a gym bag.

Choosing a Weight

The 300 g ball suits long sessions of squeezing, because it can be worked for a while without the hand tiring out of the movement. The 650 g is the middle option for general grip work. The 1,250 g and the 2,100 g are the training weights, for throwing, swinging and holding at arm's length as exercises in their own right. Each ball ships on its own, so the full set of four can be built up over time.

The 650 g suits most grip work. It loads the grip without tiring the hand out of the movement, and it leaves room to add a lighter or a heavier ball once you know how you use it. Pick the 300 g instead if the ball is going on a desk to be squeezed through the working day, and the 1,250 g or the 2,100 g for throwing and swinging.

It is filled with iron granules. The granules give the HaptikBall its feel in the hand.
