SaunaLife Titan SL1 Portable Gas Sauna Heater

The Titan SL1 is a stainless steel sauna heater that burns propane, and the practical difference that makes is in what it does not ask for. A standard propane tank connects through the regulator and 6 ft hose supplied with the heater, so there is no hard-wired electrical connection to arrange, no permanent gas line to run, no chimney and no wood to split. Output is adjustable from 4.5 to 8.1 kW, or 15,300 to 27,600 BTU, and the basket above the burner holds 44 pounds of sauna stone.

At 33 pounds and a footprint of 13.1 by 19.6 inches, this is a heater one person can pick up and carry. It covers a room volume of 140 to 350 cubic feet in a standard sauna and 140 to 425 cubic feet in an insulated one, and the same heater is what SaunaLife puts inside its SaunaTrekker and SaunaTrekker XL sauna tents. A tip switch, an oxygen sensor and a duration timer are built into the heater, and each of them acts on the gas supply. The Titan was developed in a collaboration between Finnish sauna artisans and the SaunaLife team.

The Specification

What the Titan SL1 Is Made Of

Four parts of this heater decide how it behaves: what the burner puts out, what holds the heat above it, how the gas gets in and what shuts the gas off again.

Output You Set at the Dial
The burner is adjustable from 4.5 to 8.1 kW, or 15,300 to 27,600 BTU. Two control dials sit on top of the burner base next to the data plate, and the output is set by hand at those dials.

A 44-Pound Stone Basket
The basket carries 44 pounds, or 20 kg, of sauna stone directly above the radiant heat chamber. That stone mass is what holds temperature between water pours.

Three Components That Cut the Gas
A tip switch, an integrated oxygen sensor and a 60-minute duration timer are fitted to the heater. Each one acts on the gas supply and cuts it.

The Titan Runs on a Propane Tank

The heater takes its fuel from a standard propane tank through the regulator and hose that ship in the box. Nothing about the arrangement is permanent: the installation is portable, the heater is not hardwired, and there is no electrical supply to bring to it at all. The six-foot hose gives you room to keep the tank clear of the heater.

How Heat Reaches the Stones

Below the stone basket sits a radiant heat chamber, one of the three parts the heater is built from along with the basket itself and the base underneath. That puts a 44-pound stone load directly over a burner whose output you set by hand. Stones that hold their temperature are what let you keep pouring water without the room going flat, and 44 pounds is a large mass for a heater of this size.

Moving the Heater Between Saunas

At 33 pounds, 13.1 inches wide and 19.6 inches deep, the Titan is sized to be lifted and moved. SaunaLife builds two tents around it: the SaunaTrekker, a cube for up to four people, and the SaunaTrekker XL, a dome for up to six, both of which take this heater. Each tent packs down into a bag with its storm lines, so the heater and the room it heats travel the same way.

Before You Buy

Questions About the Titan SL1

No. The Titan SL1 is not hardwired and takes no electrical supply of any kind. It runs on propane, so there is no circuit to pull, no breaker to size and no sauna control unit to wire in.
A standard propane tank. A propane regulator and a 6 ft hose come in the box, so the fittings are covered; the tank itself is bought separately.
SaunaLife says the Titan SL1 brings most saunas to sauna-ready temperature in under 30 minutes. That figure is SaunaLife's own and has no independent test behind it. What you see in your own room will depend on its volume, how well it is insulated and the outdoor temperature.
SaunaLife estimates 15 to 25 hours of sauna from a 20-pound propane tank. The spread is wide because the burner is adjustable across nearly a two-to-one power range, and running it at 8.1 kW will empty a tank sooner than running it at 4.5 kW.
For a standard sauna the range runs from 140 to 350 cu. ft. For an insulated room it reaches 425 cu. ft. at the top end. Multiply width by depth by height in feet and compare the answer against those figures.
Three of them: a tip switch, an integrated oxygen sensor and a 60-minute duration timer. Each one acts to cut the gas supply. Read the installation and operation manual that ships with the heater before first use.
Yes. Both the SaunaTrekker cube tent and the SaunaTrekker XL dome tent are built to take this heater, and both carry integrated ventilation openings for airflow. SaunaLife sells the heater and the two tents as one portable set.
Yes. One alder heater guard ships with the heater, so you do not need to add one. If you want to carry the wood further around the cage, up to three guards can be mounted using the integrated clips, and extra guards are sold on their own.
Two. The Titan SL1 Water Tank sits on the heater, releases steam through openings in its top surface and holds hot water behind an integrated spigot, which suits off-grid and remote installations. The Titan SL1 Heat Shield is a stainless panel on clips that redirects airflow and heat circulation to reduce the minimum required distance to adjacent combustible surfaces.
