Chattanooga Artromot

Chattanooga Artromot E2 Elbow CPM

The Chattanooga Artromot E2 Elbow CPM is a two-motor continuous passive motion machine for the elbow: it bends, straightens and rotates the patient's arm on its own, at settings held on the hand control. The arm rests in an upper-arm cradle and a forearm module that support the limb from the humerus to the wrist. Motor A drives extension and flexion from -5 deg to 140 deg. Motor B turns the forearm through pronation and supination, from -90 deg to 90 deg. The two run synchronised or independently of each other. At 35.2 lb (16 kg) it is easy to transport, and it carries a two-year limited warranty.

A seven-level programming tree sits on the hand control, with a speed scale where 1% is 14 deg/min and 100% is 230 deg/min, reverse on load at levels 1 to 25 on each motor, and isolation and stretching protocols. The arm support element takes a maximum continuous load of 9 kg / 20 lb, and the machine runs on 100-240 V AC at 50-60 Hz, drawing 33 VA.

Programming

How it works

The E2 is programmed on a seven-level tree, from the plain figures a clinician sets every day to the protocols and the transport position at the far end. Every setting lives on the same pendant, and the parameters are written to a memory chip card for the next session.

Motors that run apart or together
Motor A takes the elbow from -5 deg of extension to 140 deg of flexion, and motor B takes the forearm from -90 deg of pronation to 90 deg of supination with a manual setup step on that axis. The two run synchronised or non-synchronised, and each can be switched on or off on its own, so one plane can be worked while the other is held in position. The travel limits are entered before the patient is seated and the machine holds them for the session.
-5 to 140 deg
Speed set in degrees per minute
Speed is set from 1% to 100% in 1% steps, and each step converts to a real figure: 1% is 14 deg/minute and 100% is 230 deg/minute. That conversion turns a slider into a number a clinician can write into a protocol and repeat at another site. Speed applies to whichever motors are switched on, and a synchronised run and a single-plane run are programmed the same way.
14 to 230 deg/min
How Long a Session Can Run
Pauses at the end of travel run 0 to 30 seconds, and the therapy timer runs 1 to 300 minutes. Warm-up mode opens a session at 50% of the programmed range of motion and takes 15 cycles to reach the maximum values, and the machine works up to the programmed limits gradually.
1-300 min timer
What the Pendant Programs Past Speed and Travel
Reverse on load is a safety feature, programmable across levels 1 to 25 on each motor. Past that sit an isolation protocol with a stop position from 0 to 100% in 25% steps, stretching modes for extension, flexion, pronation and supination, end-range repeat protocols in both directions, and a transport setting on level 7 that parks the arm module for moving. Each is set once by the clinician and carried forward on the memory chip card.

Artromot E2

Key features

Full range of motion in two planes is what the E2 is built around, with fully synchronised motors and a hand control that keeps each patient's settings on a memory chip card.

Motors set to the protocol
Synchronised or independent, both motors take treatment parameters set to the patient's own therapy protocol.
Easily repeated sessions
The easy-to-use hand control stores treatment data on a memory chip card for repeatable treatments.
Anatomically correct adjustments
Height adjusts 35 to 71 cm and forearm length 29 to 46 cm, sizing the module to an adult arm.
Easy to transport
At 35.2 lb (16 kg), with a transport setting that parks the arm module, the E2 moves between rooms and homes.

The CPM range

How it compares

Alongside the knee, shoulder and ankle machines in this CPM range, the E2 covers the elbow and forearm, carrying -5 deg to 140 deg of flexion on a 14 to 230 deg/min speed scale with a full protocol tree.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Only authorized individuals are allowed to operate the ARTROMOT-E2/-E2 compact, following training. Before every therapy the operator confirms the device is in correct working order and completes a test run of several exercise cycles. A patient who cannot work the programming unit must never be left alone with the machine.

Do NOT use the ARTROMOT-E2/-E2 compact on patients with: acute inflammatory processes in the joints; spastic paralysis; unstable osteosynthesis. The device is not built for use in medical locations where an explosion hazard may occur, which rules out siting it alongside flammable anaesthetics or disinfectants.

The arm support element withstands a maximum continuous load of 9 kg / 20 lb. Take care to avoid chafing and pressure sores where a patient is adipose, very tall or very short.

The E2 is a treatment station with its own chair, backrest and rest for the healthy arm. The E2 compact has no chair, and the patient sits on a four-legged chair without armrests beside the module. Both take the same -5 deg to 140 deg of flexion and -90 deg to 90 deg of rotation.

The Artromot E2 Elbow Patient Kit, the soft-goods set for this machine and a per-patient item. The Artromot E2 ships without a patient kit, and the kit is sold separately.

100-240 V AC at 50-60 Hz, 33 VA, 2 A maximum motor current, fused 2 x T1A, protection class I with a Type B applied part. Multiple portable socket outlets are barred, so the machine takes a wall socket of its own. Operation is restricted to dry rooms, the machine is left to reach room temperature before use, liquids must not enter it, and magnetic and electrical fields can interfere with how it runs.

Working dimensions are 30.7 - 40.9 x 23.6 x 31.5 in. (84 - 104 x 60 x 80 cm), with the first figure growing as the height adjustment is extended. Height adjustment is 35-71 cm and forearm length adjustment is 29-46 cm. The machine weighs 35.2 lb (16 kg) and ships at 54 lb (24.5 kg).

The E2 is built to IEC 60601-1:1990 with A1:1993 and A2:1995 No. 601.1-M90, UL 2601-1, IEC 60601-1-2:2001 for EMC, and DIN EN 13485. The EU classification is MDD class 2a under Annex II of 93/42/EEC. Protection class is I with a Type B applied part.

A two-year limited warranty, covering mechanical parts and electronics for two years each. Inspect the device for damage and loose connections at least once a year, and order replacements against the current spare parts list.
