Chattanooga OptiFlex S Shoulder CPM

The Chattanooga OptiFlex S Shoulder CPM is a seated continuous passive motion machine for the shoulder, built to move the operated arm for the patient through full range of motion. The patient sits in the machine's own fully adjustable chair, with the operated arm held in an upper-arm and forearm module. Three synchronised motors carry the shoulder through abduction and adduction, internal and external rotation, and elevation. The patented universal design takes either shoulder from one machine. Safety testing covers CSA 601-1-M90 and UL 2601-1, and Chattanooga backs it with a two-year limited warranty.

Maximum weight capacity is 330 lb (150 kg), on a chair with a 19 in. (48 cm) seat height. The whole machine weighs 55 lb (25 kg), and the chair folds easily for transport and shipping.

The motors

How it works

Abduction and adduction, internal and external rotation, and elevation each run on a motor of their own, while horizontal adduction is set by hand before the machine is switched on. The pendant holds the speed, the timer, the pause and the reverse-on-load setting a session runs on.

What the Three Motors Reach
Abduction and adduction run 0-30-175 deg, internal and external rotation runs 90-0-90 deg, and elevation, also called flexion, runs 0-30-175 deg with the elbow held at 60 to 90 deg of flexion. All three are motor driven and run synchronised, and each motor switches on and off on its own: one plane can be worked while another is parked.
175 deg elevation
Everything the Hand Control Holds
Speed runs 0 to 100%, the therapy timer runs 1 to 300 minutes or continuously, and the pause at the end of travel holds 0 to 30 seconds. Reverse on load is programmable across levels 1 to 20, and warm-up mode opens a session at 50% of the programmed range of motion. Parameters are written to a memory chip card and recalled for the same patient, and a course that runs over several weeks is programmed once and repeated from the card.

The CPM range

How it compares

For shoulder work, the OptiFlex S is the machine in this CPM group, seated in a folding chair of its own. At 55 lb it is the heaviest of the four shown here, and the only one with three powered axes.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Shoulder clinics, wards and homecare providers running seated shoulder work on either side, from one machine.

330 lb (150 kg), as a maximum weight capacity for the chair, which has a 19 in. (48 cm) seat height.

No, it is the one axis set by hand. Horizontal adduction and abduction runs 0-0-125 deg, set by manual adjustment before the run and held for the session, with the patient already seated and the arm in the module.

On three separate scales above a fixed 19 in. (48 cm) seat height. Module height adjusts 14 - 28 in. (35 - 71 cm), upper-arm length adjusts 8 - 13 in. (20 - 32 cm), and lower-arm length adjusts 11 - 18 in. (29 - 46 cm). Because the three move independently, a tall patient with a short forearm and a short patient with a long one are both set up on the same chair. The healthy arm rests on its own support while the module holds the operated side.

Run a test cycle with the machine empty before treatment, and avoid rapid increases in ROM once the patient is in the chair. Do not use it outdoors or on wet surfaces, and not in the presence of flammable anaesthetic mixtures, oxygen or nitrous oxide. The chair must not be used to transport a person.

The machine arrives with its fully adjustable folding chair and the rest for the healthy arm, and it includes a patient data card and an erasable pen.

The OptiFlex S Patient Softgoods Kit, a per-patient item sold separately from the machine.

Set up for treatment it is 34.4 x 22.6 x 22.8 in. (87.5 x 57.5 x 58 cm). Folded for transport it is 14.6 x 22.6 x 22.8 in. (37 x 57.5 x 58 cm). The unit weighs 55 lb (25 kg) and ships at 107 lb (48.5 kg).

100/240 V at 50/60 Hz, 33 VA, with a 2 A maximum motor current and two 1 A fuses. Electrical class is VDE Class I with a Type B applied part. The standards on the machine are CSA IEC 60601-1:1990 with A1:1993 and A2:1995, CSA 601.1-M90, UL 2601-1 and IEC/EN 60601-1-2 for EMC, and the EU classification is MPG Class 2a.

Chattanooga backs the OptiFlex S with a two-year limited warranty. The soft-goods kit is warranted for thirty days from purchase, and the registration card goes back within ten business days.
