Chattanooga OptiFlex-K1 Knee CPM

The Chattanooga OptiFlex-K1 Knee CPM is a knee continuous passive motion machine: a motorised carriage bends and straightens the patient's knee for them, slowly and repeatedly, between programmed limits. The leg straps into padded thigh and calf troughs on a carriage that a single screw drive moves along one low rail. Knee travel runs from -10 deg of extension to 120 deg of flexion, and the same carriage produces a hip range of 0-7-115 deg. At 23 lb (10.4 kg) it is the lightest knee CPM on the market, on a wide, low-profile closed base. It comes with a standard, classic or comfort pendant and a two-year warranty.

The on-board power supply takes 100-240 V AC at 50-60 Hz, with no external transformer, and the carriage ships with its programming unit, power cord and original shipping box.

How it works

The pendant carries the whole parameter set for the carriage: travel at the knee and at the hip, speed, pauses, the therapy timer, force reversal and the patient lockout. All of it is entered before the leg goes into the troughs, and the lockout holds it there for the length of the session.

A carriage that covers knee and hip
The carriage travels from -10 deg of knee extension to 120 deg of knee flexion, and the same rail produces a hip range of 0-7-115 deg with the leg strapped into the troughs. Both ranges are entered on the pendant and both stop where the clinician stops them, and one frame serves two joints across a caseload.

Speed Runs 25 to 180 deg per Minute
Speed is set on the pendant as a percentage, 5% to 100% in 5% steps with a 50% default, across a carriage range of 25 to 180 deg/minute. Pauses hold at the end of travel for 0 to 59 seconds, and longer pauses of 1 to 59 minutes sit on the same control for protocols that dwell at one end. The therapy timer runs continuously, or for 1 to 59 minutes, or for 1 to 24 hours in 30-minute steps.

Force Reversal Built In at 45 Kp
Force reversal is built into the carriage at 45 Kp, and reverse on load is programmable across levels 1 to 25, with 25 as the default, so the drive backs off at whatever sensitivity the clinician selects. A patient lockout sits on the same pendant, which means the control can be handed to the patient with the programmed travel fixed where it was set. Both are clinician settings entered before the run and unaffected by anything the patient presses afterwards.

Which Patients the Carriage Adjusts To
Patient height runs 4 to 6.5 ft (1.2 to 2 m). Calf length adjusts 10 to 22 in. (25.4 to 55.9 cm) and thigh length adjusts 12 to 19 in. (30.4 to 48.2 cm), each independently of the other, and a long femur and a short tibia fit the same frame. The footplate reverses to bring the foot support closer for a shorter patient, and the frame stays 38 in. long whatever the troughs are set to.

Frequently asked questions

20 lb, as a maximum load on the carriage. It is a rating for what rests on the rail, and a separate number from the weight of the person on the bed.

Only authorized, trained individuals may operate the device. A patient who cannot work the controls must never be left alone with the machine, and movements must not cause pain or irritation.

The device should not be used on patients with acute inflammatory processes in the joints, unless the treating clinician directs otherwise; spastic paralysis; or unstable osteosynthesis. There is also an explosion hazard warning for areas holding flammable anaesthetics or disinfectants, a restriction to dry rooms, and an instruction to keep the carriage away from X-ray, MRI and radio systems.

No, the patient kit is sold separately. The standard accessories supplied with the carriage are the programming unit, the power cord and the original shipping box with its polystyrene pads. The kit this carriage takes is the OptiFlex Patient Kit, a per-patient item.

100-240 V AC, 50-60 Hz, on an on-board power supply, drawing 850-370 mA and fused 2 x T1A. Electrical safety class is Class 1 with a Type B applied part. The operating window is +10 C to +40 C (50 F to 104 F), 30% to 75% relative humidity and 700-1060 hPa, in dry rooms only.

Any of the three: the standard pendant is part 2025, the classic 2026 and the comfort 2028, all on the same carriage. The hand controls are interchangeable, and a fleet can standardise on one pendant or mix them.
