BioLight | Cocoon

BioLight Cocoon 360 Degree Pod

A panel points at you from one side. The Cocoon zips shut around you, and its 3600 LEDs at 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared face inward from every direction at once. It is the only device BioLight builds that closes around a body, and the only one whose light reaches the back of the body without anyone turning over. Unzipped, the same object lies flat as a 69 in. by 71 in. mat.

The specification that needs reading carefully is the irradiance. BioLight publishes five levels for the Cocoon, from 0.043 mW/cm2 at level 1 up to 0.88 mW/cm2 at level 5, and every one of those figures is measured at 0 in., meaning at the surface of the mat. That is the only distance BioLight publishes for this device. It cannot be set against the 6 in. figures quoted for their panels, because those are two different measurements of two different things. The rest of the pod is 17.4 lbs, 2 in. thick, 200W on 100-240VAC, a remote for each half, and a timer that steps in five minute increments up to thirty.

Reading the numbers

Irradiance, and Why Half the Figure Is the Distance

The Cocoon is the device in BioLight's range where the measurement distance matters most, because it is the only one quoted at contact. Here is what that number describes and what it does not.

📏
A Figure Without Its Distance Is Not a Figure
Irradiance counts how much optical power lands on a square centimetre of surface, written in mW/cm2. Light spreads as it travels, so the same emitter reads high at the face and lower a few inches back, and the number changes with nothing about the hardware changing. A distance therefore has to be attached to every reading. BioLight quotes the Cocoon at 0 in., at the mat surface, and quotes their ReStore and ReCharge panels at 6 in. Those readings answer different questions and putting them side by side would compare nothing. Every irradiance figure on this page carries the distance BioLight measured it at.
All Cocoon figures at 0 in.
💡
3600 LEDs Facing Inward
Three thousand six hundred emitters, the highest count of any BioLight device, running 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared. Because the pod zips around you, those LEDs point in from the sides and the top as well as up from underneath, which is what BioLight means by 360 degrees. Three settings are available: red and near-infrared together, red only, or near-infrared only.

Five Levels and Two Remotes
Intensity steps through five levels, and BioLight publishes an irradiance for each of them measured at 0 in.: 0.88 mW/cm2 at level 5, 0.70 at level 4, 0.55 at level 3, 0.36 at level 2 and 0.043 at level 1. The pod has a controller for each of its two halves, so the halves are set independently. The timer moves in five minute steps up to thirty minutes, or can be switched off.

🎒
A Pod That Unzips Into a Mat
Zipped, the Cocoon measures roughly 69 in. by 35.4 in. Opened flat it becomes 69 in. by 71 in., and the whole assembly is 2 in. thick and weighs 17.4 lbs, which is less than a third of what BioLight's ReJuvenate panel weighs. It draws 200W on 100-240VAC at 50/60Hz and packs into the carry bag it ships with. The interior surface is vinyl plastic, which BioLight describes as easy to wipe down between sessions.

The enclosure

Light From Every Side of a Zip-Around Shell

The Cocoon's frame is flexible, so the mat curls up and closes with a zipper into a shell roughly 69 in. long and 35.4 in. across. Inside that shell 3600 LEDs face inward at 660nm and 850nm, which is what puts light on the sides and the back of the body without repositioning. Open the zip and the same panel lies flat at 69 in. by 71 in. and works as a mat. BioLight notes that being surrounded by emitters means you feel warmth from all sides and will likely perspire during a session, and is explicit that this is not the mid- and far-infrared heat of a sauna.

  • 3600 LEDs at 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared
  • Zipped: roughly 69 in. x 35.4 in.
  • Opened flat: roughly 69 in. x 71 in.

Controls

Five Levels, Two Halves, One Clock

Each half of the Cocoon has its own remote controller, so the two halves are set separately. Intensity moves in five steps and BioLight publishes an irradiance figure for every step, all measured at 0 in.: level 5 is 0.88 mW/cm2, level 4 is 0.70, level 3 is 0.55, level 2 is 0.36 and level 1 is 0.043. The timer runs in five minute intervals to a maximum of thirty minutes and can also be switched off. Unlike BioLight's ReStore and ReCharge panels, the Cocoon has no pulsed frequency function, and BioLight publishes no Hz figure for it beyond the 60Hz flicker measurement.

  • Two remote controllers, one per half
  • Five intensity levels, 0.043 to 0.88 mW/cm2 at 0 in.
  • Programmable timer: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 minutes, or off
  • Three light settings: combined, red only, near-infrared only
  • No pulsed frequency function published for this model

Portability

Seventeen Pounds, and a Bag to Put It In

At 17.4 lbs and 2 in. thick, the Cocoon is the only full-body device BioLight builds that one person can fold up and carry. It draws 200W and accepts 100-240VAC at 50/60Hz, so it runs on North American and international supply with the adapters in the box. BioLight publishes flicker at 1.2% modulation at 60Hz, a 100,000 hour LED lifespan, a 3 year warranty and a 60 day return period, and ships this model direct from their manufacturer with a stated lead time of roughly 3 to 4 weeks.

  • Cocoon pod and travel carrying bag
  • Two remote controllers, one for each half
  • Power plug and power adapters
  • Owner's manual and the Red Light Therapy Treatment Protocols ebook
  • 100-240VAC at 50/60Hz, 200W draw
17.4 lbs Carry bag included 100-240VAC

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The two figures are measured at different distances, so they are not describing the same thing. BioLight quotes the Cocoon at 0 in., at the surface of the mat, where the highest of its five levels reads 0.88 mW/cm2. They quote the ReStore and ReCharge panels at 6 in. A contact reading and a six-inch reading answer different questions, and we will not present one as bigger or smaller than the other. BioLight publishes no 6 in. figure for the Cocoon at all.
Measured at 0 in., BioLight publishes level 5 at 0.88 mW/cm2, level 4 at 0.70, level 3 at 0.55, level 2 at 0.36 and level 1 at 0.043 mW/cm2. Each half of the pod has its own remote, so the two halves can sit on different levels.
3600 LEDs at 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared. That is the highest LED count BioLight publishes for any device they make. Three settings are available: red and near-infrared together, red only, or near-infrared only.
Zipped shut it is roughly 69 in. by 35.4 in. Opened flat it is roughly 69 in. by 71 in. BioLight also gives its overall dimensions as 69 in. x 35 in. x 2 in. Plan for the opened footprint, since that is the space you need on the floor to get into it.
BioLight states that because you are surrounded by red and near-infrared LEDs you will feel warmth from all angles and will likely perspire, possibly sweat, during a session. They are also explicit that this is not the heat of an infrared sauna, which works predominantly in the mid- and far-infrared bands. That description is BioLight's own; the Cocoon has no heating element and BioLight publishes no temperature figure for it.
No pulsed frequency function is published for the Cocoon. BioLight lists a pulsing range for the ReStore, the ReCharge and the Adapt System, and lists none here. The only Hz figure on the Cocoon page is the 60Hz flicker measurement, which describes the electrical supply. It is unrelated to any session setting.
The timer steps in five minute intervals up to thirty minutes, and can be switched off entirely. BioLight's own guidance is that 10 to 20 minutes is the practical starting range, used 3 to 5 times per week, or daily during periods when you want more consistent use.
The interior surface is vinyl plastic, which BioLight describes as easy to wipe down between sessions. The external material is a gap in BioLight's own specification: their material row reads "External -" with nothing after it. We have asked them what the outer skin is, and we will publish their answer when it arrives.
BioLight describes the Cocoon as built on their patent-pending technology. That is BioLight's description of their own product and we are repeating it as theirs. BioLight publishes no application number, no filing date and no jurisdiction alongside it, so there is nothing for a buyer to look up, and we make no claim about its patent status ourselves.
17.4 lbs and 200W, on 100-240VAC at 50/60Hz. That is the lightest and the lowest-draw full-body device BioLight makes, and it is why this one packs into a travel bag while their panels do not.
The Cocoon pod, a travel and carrying bag, two remote controllers (one for each half), a power plug with power adapters, an owner's manual and BioLight's Red Light Therapy Treatment Protocols ebook. Protective eyewear is not on BioLight's list for this model, unlike their panels.
BioLight publishes a 3 year warranty, a 60 day return period and a 100,000 hour LED lifespan. Orders ship direct from BioLight's manufacturer and they ask buyers to allow roughly 3 to 4 weeks for delivery.
