BioLight Glow Portable Device

The Glow is the smallest thing BioLight builds: 6.2 in. by 3 in. by 0.53 in., 0.6 lbs, 18 LEDs at 1W each in 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared behind a 90 degree lens. There is one control, and it is the power button. No modes, no brightness steps, no pulse rate. Press it and an automatic 10 minute cycle runs on the internal battery, which holds about 80 minutes of use and refills in about 60 over USB Type-C.

Its published output is the lowest of BioLight's three handhelds and they publish it at two distances: 18.5 mW/cm2 with the device against the skin, and 1.6 mW/cm2 at 6 in. away. BioLight is direct about what follows from the second figure, stating on their own page that eye protection is not required with this device because its irradiance is very low. Those numbers are what they are, and they set how the Glow is used: held on one small area, in contact, for the length of one cycle. That is the device. It fits in a pocket, it charges off the same cable as a phone, and it asks nothing of you beyond pressing the button.

How it is used

A Contact Device, by Its Own Two Numbers

BioLight publishes the Glow's output at contact and at 6 in. The gap between those two figures is the most useful thing on the spec sheet, because it decides how the device is held.

Held Against the Skin, or Set at a Distance
Two ways exist to run any light device: in contact with the surface, or standing off from it. Panels are built for the second, which is why BioLight quotes them at 6 in. and sells them with stands. The Glow is built for the first, and its own published pair says so plainly: 18.5 mW/cm2 with the emitting face on the skin, 1.6 mW/cm2 six inches back. The optics explain the shape of that: a 90 degree lens is a wide cone, wider than the 60 degree lens on BioLight's Shine and far wider than the 30 degree lens on their panels, and a wide cone puts light on a broad area close in. So plan contact sessions on one small area at a time. If you buy it with the stand and set it back, the figure you are working with is 1.6 mW/cm2 at 6 in., and the 18.5 one no longer applies. Neither figure is right or wrong; they belong to two different ways of holding the same device, and BioLight publishes both so you can choose knowingly.

One Button and One Ten Minute Cycle
BioLight removed the mode selector from this model on purpose and says so on their page: there are no light setting options to choose between, so the question of red only, near-infrared only or both never arises. Power on and the device runs a fixed automatic 10 minute cycle at one output, then stops. Their stated frequency guidance is 3 to 5 sessions per week. Nothing on this device dims, pulses or switches wavelength, which is the trade for its size and for a control surface with one button on it.

Both wavelengths are on whenever the device is on, since there is no way to select one. BioLight does not apply their Dual LED naming to this model the way they do to the Shine, the ReStore and the ReCharge, and they publish no diode part, bin or chip configuration for it.

Battery, EMF and BioLight's Note on Eyewear
Eighty minutes of use per charge, about sixty minutes to refill over USB Type-C, which works out to roughly eight cycles between charges. Because nothing is drawing mains current while it runs, BioLight publishes flicker at 0 Hz and EMF emission at 0.0 microtesla at contact and gives the battery as the reason for both. They also state, in their own words, that eye protection is not required with this device because its light irradiance is very low, and no eyewear is included in the box.

There is one control on the Glow and it turns the device on. BioLight states plainly on their page that no light setting options exist on this model, so nothing has to be chosen before a session starts. The automatic timer runs 10 minutes and ends the cycle. Their stated frequency guidance is 3 to 5 sessions a week. Eighty minutes of battery covers about eight of those cycles, and a full recharge takes about an hour over USB Type-C, the same connector most phones use. Where the Shine gives you four modes and a fixed 40 Hz pulse setting to think about, the Glow gives you a button.

There is no brightness control, so there are no steps beneath either figure. BioLight publishes no measurement method, meter or laboratory name for them.
That word comes from BioLight's own product title, which this listing inherited, and BioLight makes no pain claim anywhere in the body of their Glow page. We are not repeating any outcome claim behind it. What is publishable about this device is its specification: 18 LEDs at 660nm and 850nm, 18.5 mW/cm2 at contact and 1.6 mW/cm2 at 6 in., a 90 degree lens, a fixed 10 minute cycle, 0.53 in. thick at 0.6 lbs. We have flagged the title itself for rewriting.
