BioLight Guardian Oral Care Device

The Guardian is a flexible BPA-free silicone mouthpiece that sits in the mouth and runs a fixed 16 minute cycle, hands free, on a waterproof body that charges over a magnetic USB connector and holds over 2.5 hours per charge. Its lens angle is 120 degrees, the widest BioLight publishes on any of their ten devices, which is what a curved surface at zero distance calls for. Output is published at 0.65 mW/cm2 at contact, the only distance BioLight gives for it and the lowest figure in their range.

Two points of housekeeping before the specification, both of them BioLight's. Their red wavelength is published two ways on the same URL: 630nm in the written description and its spec list, 660nm in the Product Specifications table further down the page. We publish 630nm, the figure from BioLight's description, and we have asked them to reconcile the two. And BioLight describes the technology as patent-pending in three separate places while publishing no application number, publication number, filing date or jurisdiction anywhere. That phrase is theirs, attributed to them, and it is not a claim RFA makes. One more thing to know before ordering: once the Guardian has been used it cannot be returned, for hygiene reasons, and BioLight offers no trial period on it.

Sixteen Minutes, and No Way to Change Them

Every other device in this group leaves the clock to you. The Guardian sets it, because on an emitter this small the clock is the only variable BioLight left in play.

Why a Small Emitter Comes With a Fixed Clock
Two numbers describe any light session: how much light lands on each square centimetre, and how long it lands for. Multiply the two and you have the energy delivered per unit area, which is the only quantity a session plan can actually control. A panel gives you both levers, with a brightness percentage and a programmable timer. A small emitter has almost no room for the first: the Guardian's output is fixed by its hardware at 0.65 mW/cm2 at contact, with no dimming and no modes, so the only lever left is time. BioLight settled it themselves at 16 minutes on an automatic cycle and gave the buyer no adjustment, which means every Guardian session is the same length and delivers the same figure. Their stated frequency guidance is once daily as part of an oral care routine. Nothing about that is a shortcoming; it is the honest consequence of putting an emitter inside a mouthpiece.

Two Red Figures on One Page
BioLight's written description and its accompanying spec list both give the red channel as 630nm. Their Product Specifications table, on the same URL, gives it as 660nm. They do not reconcile the two anywhere. We publish 630nm, which is the figure in their description and the one this listing has always carried, and we have put the discrepancy to BioLight in writing. The near-infrared channel is 850nm and is consistent everywhere on their page. For context, eight of BioLight's ten devices use 660nm red; the Guardian and the Shine are the two that are published at 630nm.

A 120 Degree Lens Inside a Mouthpiece
Beam angle decides how quickly light spreads out from each emitter, and the right angle depends on how far the light has to travel. BioLight's panels use a 30 degree lens because they are working across six inches of air; their Shine handheld uses 60 degrees and their Glow 90. The Guardian uses 120 degrees, the widest figure they publish anywhere, on a device whose working distance is zero and whose surfaces curve away on every side. That is the geometry of an in-mouth emitter, and it is why the only irradiance figure BioLight quotes for it is a contact figure.
