BioLight Shine Handheld

The Shine is a 6.3 in. by 3.8 in. handheld, 0.87 in. thick, 12.6 oz on the scale, with 15 LEDs behind a 60 degree focusing lens at 630nm red and 850nm near-infrared. It is the only device in BioLight's range with four selectable light modes, and the only one whose fourth mode pulses at a fixed rate. It runs off an internal battery for 2 to 2.5 hours per charge, so nothing is plugged in while it is on.

BioLight publishes its output at two distances, and both belong on the page: 30 mW/cm2 at contact and 4.2 mW/cm2 at 6 in. There is no dimming, so those two figures are the whole picture. Two other things to know before you buy. The Shine is one of only two BioLight devices that use 630nm for the red channel; the other eight use 660nm. And BioLight's own copy hangs an uncited research claim on the 40 Hz mode, which RFA's earlier draft of this page reproduced without so much as a link. That claim is not on this page. The mode is, because the mode is hardware.

Fifteen Emitters on a Face the Size of a Phone

The Shine's spec sheet turns on one number: how many emitters BioLight fitted into a fixed piece of surface, and what that changes about the light coming off it.

LED Count Only Means Something Next to Face Size
Fifteen LEDs is a small number on a panel and a dense one on a handheld, and the difference is the area they sit in. The Shine's emitting face is 6.3 in. by 3.8 in. BioLight's previous handheld carried 12 LEDs in that same footprint; this generation carries 15. Nothing about the device got bigger, so the gaps between emitters got smaller. That matters because each LED throws a cone, and cones from neighbouring emitters have to overlap before the light across the face reads as an even wash and not as fifteen bright spots. A 60 degree focusing lens on each LED sets how quickly those cones spread and where they meet. This is also why LED count is worth nothing as a cross-device number: 15 on a 6.3 in. handheld and 300 on a 36 in. panel describe two different densities, and neither tells you what lands on a surface without a distance attached.

Four Settings, and the Fourth Runs at 40 Hz
Red and near-infrared together, red alone, near-infrared alone, or the combined setting with the near-infrared channel pulsing at a fixed 40 Hz. That fourth mode is the reason this handheld exists in BioLight's range; nothing else they sell under a panel has a preset pulse rate. The rate is fixed at 40 Hz with no adjustment, no range and no other preset. BioLight's own copy attaches a research claim to the number and publishes no author, journal, year or identifier behind it, so this page states the mode and leaves the claim with them.

What BioLight Means by Dual Emission
BioLight's stated design puts both wavelengths in every emitter, so on the combined setting all 15 LEDs are producing 630nm red and 850nm near-infrared at once, and on the single-wavelength settings all 15 produce whichever one you selected. They describe the emitter as patent-pending and publish no application number, publication number, filing date or jurisdiction with it, so that description is theirs and is attributed to them here. Power is published as 3W per LED across 15 LEDs.

Battery, Flicker and the 20,000 Hour Number
It runs on an internal battery for 2 to 2.5 hours per charge depending on the mode, and charges over a USB cord. Because nothing is drawing mains current while it runs, BioLight publishes flicker at 0 Hz and EMF emission at 0.0 microtesla at contact, and explains both figures that way. Diode life is published at 20,000 hours, against 100,000 hours on their panels. BioLight states a 60 day trial period and a limited 3 year warranty.

The whole device is 6.3 in. by 3.8 in. by 0.87 in. and weighs 12.6 oz, and the 15 LEDs sit across the face of it at 630nm red and 850nm near-infrared. A 60 degree focusing lens covers each one. BioLight publishes the output at two distances, and the pair is the useful thing: 30 mW/cm2 with the device against the skin, and 4.2 mW/cm2 at 6 in. away. There is no brightness control on this model, so those two figures describe every session it will ever run. The 630nm red channel is worth noting: eight of BioLight's ten devices use 660nm, and the Shine and the Guardian are the two that do not.

Four Settings, and What We Will and Will Not Say About the Fourth

Setting one runs red and near-infrared together. Setting two runs red alone, which you can see. Setting three runs near-infrared alone, which looks close to dark because 850nm sits past the visible band. Setting four runs the combined output with the near-infrared channel pulsing at a fixed 40 Hz, and that is the only preset pulse rate anywhere in BioLight's handheld line. BioLight's own copy attaches a claim about what 40 Hz does to a person, hyperlinked to nothing that names an author, a journal, a year or an identifier. RFA's earlier draft of this page carried that claim as plain text with no link and no source whatsoever. We have removed it. The 40 Hz setting stays on the page as what it is: a pulsed mode the hardware has.

Two Finishes, a Magnetic Sleeve and a Stand Question

Rose Gold and Black are the two finishes, at the same specification. BioLight's package list includes a magnetic protective sleeve that they say doubles as a stand, and their store separately offers a stand as a paid option at checkout; those two statements sit on the same page and BioLight does not reconcile them. So: a stand option exists at the point of purchase, over and above the sleeve in the box. If the selector on this listing shows a finish name twice at two different prices, the higher of the pair is the one carrying the added stand, and we are restoring the stand to its own selector so it reads plainly. Goggles are provided with the Shine on request.

BioLight publishes two figures for it: 30 mW/cm2 at 0 in., meaning the device against the skin, and 4.2 mW/cm2 at 6 in. Both are BioLight's own and both belong with their distance attached, because they describe two very different sessions. The Shine has no brightness control, so there is no ladder of steps underneath either figure. BioLight publishes no measurement method, meter or laboratory for them.

Both BioLight's description and their specification block state 630nm for the Shine, so the figure is consistent on their page. It is a genuine difference from the rest of the range: eight of BioLight's ten devices use 660nm red, and the Shine and the Guardian are the two exceptions. The near-infrared channel is 850nm, the same as every other device they build.

Every Shine ships with a magnetic protective sleeve that BioLight states doubles as a stand. BioLight also offers a separate stand as a paid option at checkout, and their page does not explain how the two differ. If you want the added stand, choose the higher-priced option of the pair for your finish. We have raised the discrepancy with BioLight and we are restoring the stand to its own selector on this listing.
