InBody 580 Body Composition Analyzer

The InBody 580 Body Composition Analyzer is the four-frequency analyzer in InBody's range, and one test takes twenty impedance measurements in about 30 seconds. The four frequencies, 5 kHz, 50 kHz, 250 kHz and 500 kHz, are each read separately at both arms, both legs and the trunk. The fourth speed, 250 kHz, does not appear on the InBody 380 or the InBody 270S. Twenty readings are why the 580 reports by segment what the 380 reports as one figure. Impedance is the opposition the body puts up to the current.

Segmental means each arm, each leg and the trunk is measured on its own and reported on its own. Segmental Phase Angle is the first of three, and phase angle is the single number worked out from the impedance readings. The 580 reports it at 50 kHz, once per body segment. Segmental ECW/TBW analysis is the second, and ECW/TBW is the share of your body water that sits outside the cells. Segmental Intracellular Water is the third. Visceral Fat Area prints where the InBody 380 prints Visceral Fat Level, and visceral fat is the deep fat held inside the abdominal wall. Intracellular and extracellular water arrive as standard outputs. So does Soft Lean Mass, which measures lean mass with the bone mineral subtracted from it. Lean Body Mass is the total of everything on you that is not fat, and it prints with Body Fat Mass. Skeletal Muscle Mass is the voluntary muscle you use to move, and Percent Body Fat sits beside it. Segmental Lean Analysis and Body Composition History finish the standard list. The device covers 5 to 300 kg and 95 to 220 cm, and stores up to 100,000 measurements when an ID is entered. A 10.1 in. color TFT LCD drives the interface, against 7 in. on the InBody 570 and the InBody 270S. The carton holds a box of 300 InBody tissues and a LookinBody Web credit that expires 90 days after the device reaches you. InBody backs the 580 with a 1 year manufacturer's warranty.

How the measurement works

How it works

Multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis is the method every device in this range uses. A small current goes through the body at more than one speed, and the device reads how hard each speed is to push. The frequency count is the multiplier on everything downstream of it. The InBody 580 carries four where the InBody 380 and InBody 570 carry three and the InBody 270 carries two.

What multi-frequency BIA measures
Bioelectrical impedance analysis passes a small alternating current through the body and measures the opposition, or impedance, that the current meets. Different frequencies pass through the body differently. A device sending more than one frequency therefore has more than one reading to work from at the same point on the body. A single-frequency consumer scale has exactly one. The InBody 580 sends four into every one of the five body segments it reads. Every value it reports comes from measured impedance, with no empirical estimations based on age, sex, ethnicity or body type.
5, 50, 250, 500 kHz
Why the count multiplies
Frequencies multiply by segments. The InBody 580 takes twenty impedance measurements, four frequencies at each of five segments: right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg. The InBody 380 and the InBody 570 run three frequencies for fifteen measurements, and the InBody 270 runs two for ten. Cut one frequency and you lose five readings, one at every segment. The whole ladder between these analyzers is that one piece of arithmetic repeated.
4 x 5 = 20
The fourth frequency
The 250 kHz band is the one the InBody 580 adds. Of the five analyzers compared here it sits on the 580 alone. The 380 and the 570 run 5, 50 and 500 kHz, the InBody 270S runs 20, 50 and 100 kHz, and the InBody 270 runs 20 and 100 kHz. Five extra readings per test come from that single addition, one at each of the five body segments. Those five readings are what the segmental outputs further down the sheet are built on.
250 kHz
Values reported per segment
Phase angle, the ECW/TBW ratio and intracellular water are reported by the InBody 580 for each of the five segments separately. The InBody 380 reports phase angle and the water ratio as one whole body figure each. The InBody 270S carries whole body phase angle and no water ratio, and the InBody 270 and InBody 570 carry neither. The 580 also gives Visceral Fat Area as an additional output where the 380 and the 270 range give Visceral Fat Level. What any of those values means for the person tested is an interpretation for the professional holding the sheet.

Measurement

Impedance measurements in about 30 seconds

The InBody 580 takes 5 kHz, 50 kHz, 250 kHz and 500 kHz readings at the right arm, the left arm, the trunk, the right leg and the left leg. Four frequencies at five segments is twenty readings, and the whole sequence is timed at about 30 seconds. Contact happens at eight points: two on each hand, two on each foot. The current electrodes are separate from the voltage electrodes, so skin resistance at the contact point stays out of the measured value. The device covers a weight range of 5 to 300 kg and a height range of 95 to 220 cm, for ages 3 years and older. The InBody 380 covers the same three ranges on one frequency fewer.

  • Frequencies 5, 50, 250 and 500 kHz
  • Segments: right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg, left leg
  • Test duration about 30 seconds
  • Weight range 5 to 300 kg, 11.0 to 661.4 lb

Outputs

Phase angle for each of the five segments

Segmental Phase Angle, Segmental ECW/TBW analysis, Intracellular Water and Extracellular Water all sit among the InBody 580's standard outputs. On the InBody 380 the equivalent entries are Whole Body Phase Angle and a single ECW ratio figure. On the InBody 270S and the InBody 270, neither ECW/TBW nor segmental phase angle appears at all. The 580 gives these as five separate numbers, one per segment, measured at 50 kHz. A clinic tracking one limb against another reads those five numbers side by side. What a value means for a given person belongs to the professional reading the result sheet at the end of the test.

  • Segmental Phase Angle at 50 kHz for all five segments
  • Segmental ECW/TBW analysis
  • Intracellular Water and Extracellular Water as standard outputs
  • Segmental Lean Analysis, Segmental Fat Analysis, Body Composition History
  • Additional outputs include Visceral Fat Area, Basal Metabolic Rate, which is the energy you use at complete rest, Skeletal Muscle Index, InBody Score, Arm Circumference and Impedance Graph

Compare

How it compares

The 250 kHz frequency belongs to the InBody 580 alone. The InBody 270S, 380, 570 and 270 run three current speeds or two, and none of them carries a fourth. That fourth speed takes the test from fifteen impedance measurements to twenty. It also puts phase angle and the water ratio on the sheet segment by segment. The InBody 380 and the refurbished InBody 570 report each of those as one whole body figure.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Four: 5 kHz, 50 kHz, 250 kHz and 500 kHz. The number matters because it multiplies, giving 20 impedance measurements from 4 different frequencies at each of 5 segments. Cut a frequency and you cut five readings, one per segment. The InBody 380 and the InBody 570 run three frequencies for 15 measurements, and the InBody 270 runs two for 10.
The 580 adds Segmental Phase Angle, Segmental ECW/TBW analysis, Segmental Intracellular Water, and Intracellular Water and Extracellular Water as standard outputs. It also reports Visceral Fat Area where the 380 gives Visceral Fat Level. The 380 covers the same five body segments, the same 5 to 300 kg range and the same 30 second test, at 16 kg against 24.4 kg.
Phase angle is a single value the analyzer works out from its impedance readings, written in degrees. The InBody 580 reports it at 50 kHz for each of the five segments as a standard output, so a result sheet carries five phase angle figures in place of one. The InBody 380 and the InBody 270S report phase angle as a single whole body number, and the InBody 570 and InBody 270 do not report it at all. What a given phase angle value means for a person is an interpretation for the professional reading the result sheet.
Segmental analysis means the device measures the right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg separately and reports a figure for each. Arms and legs are thin and the trunk is thick, so their impedance values are not interchangeable, and a whole body average hides the difference between a client's left side and right side. The InBody 580 prints Segmental Lean Analysis and Segmental Fat Analysis on every sheet, and it extends the same treatment to phase angle, ECW/TBW and intracellular water.
About 30 seconds, the same figure as the InBody 380 and the InBody 270S, and the 580 fits four frequencies into it where those two fit three. The InBody 570 is timed at about 50 seconds and the InBody 270 at 15 seconds.
Weight range 5 to 300 kg (11.0 to 661.4 lb). Height range 95 to 220 cm. Age range 3 years and older. All three match the InBody 380 exactly. The refurbished InBody 570 covers less ground at both ends, 10 to 270 kg, and the InBody 270S runs 2 to 250 kg.
Visceral Fat Area, which sits among the 580's additional outputs. Visceral Fat Level is the figure on the InBody 380, the InBody 270S and the InBody 270.
501.9 mm (W) x 892.4 mm (L) x 1124.4 mm (H), roughly 19.8 in. x 35.1 in. x 44.3 in., with an equipment weight of 24.4 kg (53.8 lb). Allow 19.8 in. of width and 35.1 in. of length on a level floor near a standard outlet, plus stepping room in front of the platform. At 24.4 kg it is 8.4 kg heavier than the InBody 380 and 11 kg heavier than the InBody 270S.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth plus a QR code scanner on the device, with LookinBody120, LookinBody Web, the InBody App and InBody Touch as the compatible software. The internal database holds up to 100,000 measurements when a member ID is entered, which is also what ties a client's Body Composition History together across visits.
It means no value on the sheet is generalized from age, sex, ethnicity or body type. The result is built from measured impedance taken at each segment at multiple frequencies, so on the InBody 580 all twenty readings come from the person standing on the platform. It is also why keeping test conditions steady matters: bare feet on the electrodes, arms held clear of the torso, and a similar time of day relative to meals, exercise and fluids.
Only when the analyzer is paired with a compatible InBody blood pressure device such as the BPBIO 750, because the 580 itself takes no blood pressure reading. Height transfers the same way from a paired BSM 170B stadiometer over Bluetooth, which saves keying a figure in at the screen on every test.
The InBody 380 shares the five segments, the 5 to 300 kg range, the about-30-second test and the 100,000 measurement database. The 580 adds the fourth frequency and the segmental reporting of phase angle, ECW/TBW and intracellular water. The 380 gives a whole body phase angle figure at 16 kg and 15 impedance measurements, on a base 86 mm narrower than the 580's.

Q&A

Can it travel, have a travel bag Major differences between 270 model?
The InBody 570 is not foldable like the 270 is, so it is not as portable. The major differences between the two models is that the 570 provides more outputs, like intracellular/extracellular water, segmental fat and muscle analysis, etc.
