InBody 270S Portable Body Composition Analyzer

The InBody 270S is a professional body composition analyzer that folds up and travels, and it reads the split between fat, muscle and water. It weighs 13.4 kg and stands on a 356 mm base. A camp or a satellite clinic gets a full analyzer for the day. Testing sends a small current through the body at three speeds: 20 kHz, 50 kHz and 100 kHz. Every speed is read at both arms, both legs and the trunk. That comes to fifteen impedance measurements, the resistance the body offers, in about 30 seconds. Eight contact points carry the current, two on each hand and two on each foot.

A finished test prints a result sheet, and the 270S fills it with named values. Weight and Total Body Water open the list. Lean Body Mass, which means everything on you that is not fat, prints with Body Fat Mass. Skeletal Muscle Mass is the muscle that moves your joints, and it sits beside Percent Body Fat. Muscle analysis and body fat analysis come out by region, so each arm, each leg and the trunk carry a figure of their own. Whole Body Phase Angle is the single number the analyzer works out from its impedance readings. How contact is made

Skin Resistance Stays Out of the Reading

Every reading on the InBody 270S begins at the electrodes. The arrangement here is tetrapolar, which means four poles, laid out as eight tactile contacts with a bar type hand electrode. Where those eight contacts sit decides where each of the fifteen measurements starts and stops. A consumer scale reads foot to foot through the legs and works the rest of you out from there. The 270S reads from the hands and the feet, so both arms and the trunk sit inside the circuit.

What Tetrapolar Means

A four-pole arrangement separates the electrodes that inject the current from the electrodes that read the voltage. Two contacts sit on each hand and two on each foot, eight points in all. The reading contacts carry almost no current, so the resistance of the skin at the contact point stays out of the measured value. Measurement begins from the same two anatomical points on every test, the hands and the feet. Two tests taken weeks apart on the same person therefore start from the same place on the body.

The Bar Type Hand Electrode

The hand electrode on the InBody 270S is a bar the client grips in each hand. The thumb goes on the oval contact at the top and the fingers wrap the handle, which puts two contacts on each hand. Arms are held down and away from the torso for the duration of the test so the arm and the trunk stay electrically separate. The on-screen and spoken guidance walks a client through that position step by step, so a test runs with or without a trained operator standing beside the platform.

Heels sit on the rear round electrodes and the soles of the feet meet the sole electrodes, toes pointed forward, bare, with socks and shoes off. Those four foot contacts complete the eight point system. With hands and feet in place the current has a defined path through the right arm, the left arm, the trunk, the right leg and the left leg. Reading those five paths one at a time is what segmental measurement means on a body composition analyzer.

Through that electrode arrangement the InBody 270S takes 20 kHz, 50 kHz and 100 kHz readings at each of the five segments, which is fifteen impedance measurements in one test. Frequencies multiply by segments, so each frequency a device carries is worth five more readings. The discontinued InBody 270 runs two frequencies through the same eight point layout for ten measurements, and the InBody 580 runs four for twenty.

The InBody 380 is 16 kg on 415.5 mm and the InBody 580 is 24.4 kg on 501.9 mm. One person can carry the 270S to a corporate screening day, a team facility or a satellite clinic. Questions Buyers Ask About the InBody 270S

No. They are two devices, and they differ on four counts. The 270S runs three frequencies (20, 50, 100 kHz) for 15 impedance measurements over about 30 seconds and reports Whole Body Phase Angle. The 270 runs two frequencies (20, 100 kHz) for 10 impedance measurements over 15 seconds and reports no phase angle. The 270S replaced the 270 in InBody USA's line-up. A new 270 is no longer built, so a refurbished unit is how that model reaches a buyer today.

A bioelectrical impedance analyzer sends a small alternating current through the body and measures the opposition it meets. A single-frequency device sends one current, so it has one reading to work from at each point on the body. The InBody 270S sends 20 kHz, 50 kHz and 100 kHz. kHz is how fast the current alternates, and each speed travels through the body differently. The device therefore has three separate readings at every one of the five segments. Three frequencies at five segments is where the 15 impedance measurements figure comes from. It is also why the 270S reports Whole Body Phase Angle where the two-frequency InBody 270 does not.

It reports Total Body Water as a single figure. The split between water inside the cells and water outside them arrives further up the range. The InBody 380 reports an ECW ratio, and the InBody 580 reports intracellular and extracellular water as standard outputs, plus segmental ECW/TBW. If a water ratio figure is part of your protocol, step up to the 380.

Segmental analysis means the device measures five parts of the body separately and reports a figure for each one: right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg. A whole-body reading produces a single number for the person; a segmental reading produces five. Arms and legs are thin and the trunk is thick, so their impedance values are not interchangeable, and reading them one at a time is what produces a per-limb figure. The InBody 270S does this and prints muscle analysis by region and body fat analysis by region across those five segments on every result sheet.

That separation keeps skin resistance at the contact point out of the measured value. The device holds up to 100,000 test results internally, which keeps the day's testing safe if the network drops.

The analyzer carries a 1 year manufacturer's warranty from InBody. An InBody USB thumb drive and InBody posters are separate items on their own order lines. Budget for paper the way you would for any device that hands the client a printed page at the end of the session.

Keep the conditions the same. Test bare-footed with the hands on the bar electrodes and the arms held away from the torso, at a similar time of day and a similar point relative to meals, exercise and fluids. The device holds its side of that steady. Its eight contact points are fixed at the hands and the feet, and every value on the sheet is built from impedance measured on the person standing there. The sheet carries no empirical estimations worked out from age, sex, ethnicity or body type.

The InBody 380, if measurement depth is what you are buying. Same 15 impedance measurements and the same three frequency count, plus ECW ratio, Soft Lean Mass, Skeletal Muscle Index and Arm Circumference, on a 5 to 300 kg range. The cost is 2.6 kg of extra equipment weight and a 59 mm wider base. If the analyzer never leaves one room and a water ratio figure is part of your protocol, the 380 is the better buy. If it has to move between sites, the 270S folds and the 380 does not.
