Therabody RecoveryTherm Cube

The Therabody RecoveryTherm Cube is a heat and cold therapy device, a battery-powered block that straps against a joint and leaves your hands free, with no ice and no wall socket. One aluminium face does both jobs: cold for 18 minutes, heat for 24 and a contrast cycle for 20. Every mode has three settings, shown on one, two or three lights. The block weighs 345 g and measures 4.4 by 2.2 by 3.1 inches. A strap frame, a 23.6-inch strap, a 39.4-inch strap and a USB-C cable complete the box. The Cube is FDA Registered and HSA/FSA Accepted, with a 1-year limited warranty.

Contrast is the mode that sets this block apart from a gel pack out of the freezer. It alternates five minutes of cold with five minutes of heat, then repeats the pair. It runs at the far end of each range, 8°C (46°F) against 43°C (109°F), for 20 minutes end to end. Heat on its own sits at 35°C (95°F), 39°C (102°F) or 43°C (109°F). Cold on its own sits at 16°C (61°F), 12°C (54°F) or 8°C (46°F). The battery carries 120 minutes of heat or cold, and 60 minutes of contrast.

Charging happens over USB-C with the cable supplied, and the light on the face reads orange for a low battery, blue for medium and green for full. The Cube is FDA Registered, which is a listing of the device with the agency and not a review of safety or effectiveness. It is HSA/FSA Accepted too, with your plan administrator deciding any individual claim. A 1-year limited warranty comes with it. The housing will not tolerate water, so a dampened microfiber cloth is as wet as cleaning gets.

Cold, 18 minutes on three steps
The cold treatment runs 18 minutes at one of three settings: 16°C (61°F) on a single light, 12°C (54°F) on two, 8°C (46°F) on three. It opens on 16°C, the mildest of the three, which is the setting you get if you change nothing. The block holds the setting you leave it on for the whole 18 minutes and then powers itself off.

Heat, 24 minutes on three steps
Heat runs 24 minutes, six longer than the cold treatment, at 35°C (95°F) on one light, 39°C (102°F) on two or 43°C (109°F) on three. It opens on 35°C, the mildest step, the same way cold does. The top heat setting and the coldest cold setting are the two ends the contrast mode uses.

Contrast, 20 minutes at both extremes
Contrast runs five minutes cold, five minutes hot, then the pair again, 20 minutes end to end. It uses the extremes of both ranges, 8°C (46°F) and 43°C (109°F). That is the mode the battery is shortest on: 60 minutes, against 120 for heat or cold alone, or three full cycles on a charge.

The aluminium face and what it sits in
The side that touches you is aluminium, set into a housing of PC and ABS plastic. One metal plate is what lets a single device go cold on one treatment and hot on the next with no accessory to swap. Around it goes the strap frame, a clip-on case of plastic and silicone that the neoprene straps thread through. The frame also takes the knocks of a gym bag, which is the other job a hard case does on a device this small.

A strap frame and two strap lengths

The box holds the block, the Cube strap frame, two straps and a USB-C charging cable. The frame is a clip-on case of plastic and silicone that wraps the device and gives the straps something to thread through, so the aluminium face still meets the skin while the rest of the block sits in a shell. The two straps are the reason one device covers a wrist and a thigh: the short one is 23.6 inches, the long one 39.4 inches, both neoprene with Velcro. A USB-A adapter is not part of the kit, so the cable needs a port or a plug you already own.

Strapped to the joint or held against it

Two flat grip areas on the sides let you press the block against a calf or a forearm by hand. Clip it into the frame and a strap takes over, and a 24-minute heat treatment then runs while you cook dinner. The face goes on bare skin or through light clothing. Two practical limits come with that: the air vents have to stay clear, and your body weight should never rest on the device, which rules out lying on top of it to treat a back.

Running A Session

What a session actually looks like

Put the block where you want it and start the mode you want. Cold opens at 16°C (61°F) and heat at 35°C (95°F), so a first session lands on the mildest version of whichever you chose. The lights on the face are the readout: one, two or three of them for the setting in use, and orange, blue or green for the battery. At the end of the 18, 24 or 20 minutes the Cube powers itself down on its own timer.

Both straps are neoprene with Velcro and both thread through the same frame. There is no USB-A adapter and no wall plug, so charge it from a port or an adapter you already have.
It fits you, not another device. The Cube is a standalone unit with no attachments, no heads and nothing sold to bolt onto it. The two strap lengths are what decide where it goes: a wrist, an elbow, a knee, an ankle, a shoulder or a thigh. Every mode and every setting is chosen on the device itself, and the lights on the face report both the setting and the battery.
A rechargeable battery inside the block, charged over the USB-C cable in the box. Runtime is 120 minutes in heat, 120 minutes in cold and 60 minutes in contrast. Against the fixed treatment lengths that is five full heat treatments, six cold ones or three contrast cycles before the cable comes out. The light on the face reads orange for a low battery, blue for medium and green for full, and it flashes while the cable is in.
A dampened microfiber cloth on the aluminium face and the housing, and nothing wetter than that. The device is not waterproof, so it never goes under a tap or into a sink. The straps and the Velcro take the wear on a product like this, and the frame protects the body of the block from knocks in a gym bag. Nothing in the kit is a consumable and no part needs replacing on a schedule. The straps are the components you handle every session, and the Velcro on them is the first thing to check if the block starts sliding on a calf.
The Cube is a battery-powered block that works on one joint at a time, held in place by a strap and giving both heat and cold. The RecoveryTherm Knee is contoured for a knee and adds vibration, and the ThermBack LED is the one for a lower back, because the Cube is worn on a joint rather than lain on.
