Chattanooga Intelect

Chattanooga Intelect TranSport Ultrasound

The Chattanooga Intelect TranSport Ultrasound is a portable therapeutic ultrasound unit built around one interchangeable, pre-calibrated sound head, selectable between 1 MHz and 3.3 MHz. Four head sizes from 1 to 10 cm2 set the output ceiling, and the 10 cm2 head reaches 20 W at 1 MHz. Pulsed duty cycles of 10, 20 and 50 percent sit beside 100 percent continuous, all set on a keypad against a graphical LCD. At 5.07 lb with base and head, it runs from 120-240 V mains or a NiMH battery pack. The 5 cm2 head comes standard, with the other three sizes available.

The unit is 12.9 in. deep by 11.3 in. wide with an applicator fitted and 6.4 in. tall. The transportable NiMH pack of twenty AA cells weighs 1.87 lb and drops straight into the base in place of the mains lead.

Output and control

How it works

On a therapeutic ultrasound generator the sound head on the end of the cable sets the output, so the four head sizes and their radiating areas tell you more than any single headline figure.

Output Power by Head Size
0-2 W on the 1 cm2 head, 0-4 W on the 2 cm2, 0-10 W on the 5 cm2, and on the 10 cm2 head 0-20 W at 1 MHz or 0-10 W at 3.3 MHz. Intensity covers 0 to 2.5 W/cm2 in continuous mode and 0 to 3 W/cm2 in the pulsed modes. The head sets the ceiling, so the head you fit decides the output the machine can reach.
Up to 20 W
Effective Radiating Area and BNR
Effective radiating area, the share of the head face that actually radiates sound, is 0.7-1 cm2 on the 1 cm2 head, 1.4-2 cm2 on the 2 cm2, 3.5-5 cm2 on the 5 cm2 and 6.8-10 cm2 on the 10 cm2. Beam nonuniformity ratio is 5.0:1 maximum on all four heads. ERA and BNR are the two figures a clinician reads to judge a sound head, and both belong to the head itself and not to the console it plugs into.
BNR 5.0:1 max
Duty Cycles and the Timer
Pulsed duty cycles of 10, 20 and 50 percent sit alongside a 100 percent continuous setting. Maximum treatment time is 30 minutes with a timer accuracy of +/-0.2 minute. Every parameter is set on a keypad against a graphical LCD, before the head goes on the skin.
30 min ceiling
Mains Supply and Electrical Class
Mains input is 120-240 V, 50/60 Hz, 75 VA, and electrical classification is CLASS I with a TYPE B applied part. The battery alternative is the NiMH pack of twenty AA cells, which takes the unit away from an outlet for a run of treatments.

Ownership

Key features

A 5.07 lb unit that works from mains or battery, with heads that swap on the same console and an adapter that docks it to a therapy cart.

Weight and case size
5.07 lb with base and applicator, in a case 6.4 in. tall that moves between treatment rooms.
Runtime off mains
The NiMH pack is rated for 2 to 5 hours of treatment, enough to work through a run of sessions away from an outlet.
Pre-calibrated heads
Each sound head is pre-calibrated and interchangeable, so changing head size is a swap on the same console.
Wide-range mains
120 to 240 V input is wide enough to run the unit outside North America without a transformer.

The family

How it compares

The TranSport Ultrasound shares its NiMH pack, carry bag and cart adapter with the TranSport Combo and the TranSport 2-Channel, and it is the one of the three that carries ultrasound alone.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

No. This is the first-generation Intelect TranSport Ultrasound, on its own chassis. The Intelect Transport 2 Ultrasound is the later generation, with a 2 after the name, and its sound heads, battery and cart mounting do not interchange with this machine.

Four sizes: 1 cm2, 2 cm2, 5 cm2 and 10 cm2, all of them first-generation Intelect ultrasound applicators. The 5 cm2 head is the standard one supplied with the unit, and the other three are separate orders.

Both frequencies are selectable on this unit, and the head fitted decides which of them you can use. 1 MHz is the deeper-tissue frequency and 3.3 MHz the superficial one. The 1 cm2 head runs 3.3 MHz only, while the 2, 5 and 10 cm2 heads run both. On the 10 cm2 head, output power is 0-20 W at 1 MHz and 0-10 W at 3.3 MHz, so frequency and head size together set the ceiling.

Mains at 120-240 V, 50/60 Hz, 75 VA, or the transportable NiMH battery pack of twenty AA cells, which adds 1.87 lb to the 5.07 lb console.

Frequency, duty cycle, intensity and treatment time, on the keypad against the graphical LCD. Intensity runs 0 to 2.5 W/cm2 continuous and 0 to 3 W/cm2 pulsed, and the timer stops at 30 minutes whichever of the four heads is fitted.

Do not use this unit where cancerous lesions are present, where open wounds exist, over pregnancy, near cardiac pacemakers, over a fracture site, on the eyes, over or near bone growth centres, or in ischaemic tissue from vascular disease. Read every contraindication in the manual before a first treatment.

Keep the applicator in continuous motion and maintain full skin or water contact while intensity is being set, because improper technique carries a burn risk. The device must not be used during administration of flammable anaesthetics, and patients with an implanted neurostimulation device must not be treated with or be close to any shortwave diathermy.

The standard accessories are the 5 cm2 applicator, transmission gel and a mains cord. The battery pack, the Intelect TranSport carry bag and the other three head sizes are sold separately.

Yes, through the grey TranSport cart adapter, a separate part that mates the unit to the Vectra Genisys therapy cart.

Chattanooga backs the unit for two years (24 months) from the date of original consumer purchase and each applicator for one year (12 months). Repairs are carried out by a service centre certified by Chattanooga.
