Jugs Changeup Super Softball Pitching Machine

The Jugs Changeup Super Softball Pitching Machine is a single-wheel softball pitching machine for realistic game-like batting practice, switching between fastballs up to 70 mph and changeups as low as 44 mph at the push of a button. The switch comes from the handheld remote or the controls on the machine, and it moves from risers to fastballs to changeups. A digital display shows the set speed at a glance. Its patented 16 in. Grip-Tite tire is non-marking and lasts 4x longer than solid tires. The 360-degree swivel base turns the same machine to fly balls, ground balls and catcher pop-ups.

A 26 mph drop arrives with no change in the delivery, so the hitter has to decide with her hands and cannot lean on her timing. No other single-wheel Jugs softball machine throws a changeup.

With the remote, a coach can call the changeup from behind the plate. Underneath, the machine runs one wheel and feeds 11 in. or 12 in. softballs through the same chute. It weighs 75 lbs., and on the cart version a transport cart slides into the base so it tilts back and wheels off the field.

How it works

What the changeup button does

A push of a button switches from risers to fastballs with changeups as low as 44 mph, using the handheld remote or the controls on the machine, and the remote reaches up to 300 ft. Nobody walks to the machine, so the hitter has no approach to read, and the coach can stand behind the plate, watch the front shoulder and the hands, and call the changeup on the pitch he chooses. Among the Jugs softball machines, the Changeup Super and the BP3 Softball are the two with a remote changeup.

The Grip-Tite tire

The patented Grip-Tite 16 in. non-marking pneumatic tire lasts 4x longer than solid tires and holds its pitch accuracy without melting, cracking or chunking. Keep the Grip-Tite at 16 to 17 psi; the mini3 Softball runs a 9 in. Grip-Tite and the BP3 Softball a 12 in.

The 360-Degree Swivel Base

The base swivels a full 360 degrees and is great for fly balls, ground balls and catcher pop-ups. A catcher gets few live reps at a ball straight up over the plate, and the swivel base points the machine near vertical to produce them on demand. Angle it down and the same machine rolls grounders at an infield. Turn it out and it puts fly balls in the gap.

A digital display and a changeup zone

A dial on the digital readout panel sets the speed, and the display shows the set speed at a glance. Fastballs set between 50 and 70 mph sit inside the changeup zone, and a press of the remote drops the pitch from there. The display reads CU until the machine reaches changeup speed, about 8 seconds later, and the coach knows the next ball is the slow one.

At 43 feet a 70 mph fastball and a 44 mph changeup arrive far enough apart that a hitter who has committed early finishes her swing before the ball gets there. The switch happens at the push of a button, with the handheld remote or the machine's own controls, between risers, fastballs and changeups. Nothing about the delivery changes, only the number the wheel is turning at.
