Jugs SP3 Softball Pitching Machine

The SP3 Softball and the BP3 Softball throw at exactly the same speeds, 45-75 mph, so speed is not what you are choosing between. The SP3 Softball is the location machine. Jugs describes it in three words that no other page in this set uses: black to black. The Pinpoint micro-adjustment system moves the pitch horizontally or vertically without moving the machine, so a coach parks the SP3 on the outside black, throws twenty pitches there, then dials it to the inside black and throws twenty more. A hitter who has only ever taken batting practice down the middle has never had to cover a corner. This is the machine that makes her.

Seven pitch types come off the Select-A-Pitch dial: fastballs, right and left-handed curves and screwballs, risers and drops. Jugs sums up the operation as dial speed, select a pitch, go, and calls the SP3 the easiest to use high-end three-wheel pitching machine on the market. The delivery height replicates a live pitcher's angle. A transport cart takes the machine on and off the field with a tilt and a roll. Jugs states a 20-year life expectancy for the SP3 Softball. It publishes no changeup on this model, and no power source, tire size, motor rating, chute size, weight or overall dimensions either; nothing on this page has been borrowed from the BP3 Softball to cover those gaps.

Inside the SP3 Softball

Where the Pitch Goes, and What Is Not on This Dial

Two of the four cards below explain what the SP3 Softball adds. The other two explain what it leaves to the BP3 Softball, and what Jugs does not publish at all.

🎯
Pinpoint, and What Black to Black Means
The black is the edge of home plate. Black to black is a coach's way of saying the machine will put the ball on either edge on demand, and Jugs uses the phrase as the headline claim for this machine. Pinpoint is the patented micro-adjustment system that gets it there: adjust pitch location horizontally or vertically, and Jugs states the change is instant. What that replaces is the old way of moving a pitching machine, which is dragging the legs, sighting down the barrel, throwing a pitch, and dragging again while eight hitters stand and watch. With Pinpoint the machine stays where it was set up and the location moves. That turns a single machine into a station: fifteen pitches on the outside corner, dial it in, fifteen more on the inside, dial it down, fifteen at the knees. Jugs publishes Pinpoint on two machines in this softball set, the SP3 and the BP3, and on neither of the single-wheel machines.

Seven Pitch Types, Both Directions
Jugs enumerates all seven on the Select-A-Pitch dial for the SP3 Softball: fastballs, right and left-handed curves, right and left-handed screwballs, risers and drops. The handedness is the part that matters to a fastpitch hitter. A right-handed curve and a left-handed curve break in opposite directions across the plate, and a hitter who only sees one develops one read. Full enumeration also makes the SP3 unusual here. The BP3 Softball claims eight pitches but Jugs names only some of them; the mini3 Softball claims seven and names five shapes. On the SP3 the published list is complete.
7 named pitches
One Speed at a Time
The SP3 Softball is the three-wheel machine without a changeup. Jugs publishes no remote speed control and no automatic pitching circuit for this model. Speed is set at the machine and holds until someone changes it. For hitters learning to cover a corner or read the direction of a break that is the right behaviour, because a constant speed removes one variable from a drill that already has two. When timing deception is the point of the session, the machine to read about is the BP3 Softball, which adds remote-control changeups and programmed fastball and changeup sequences at the same 45-75 mph.
No changeup
What Jugs Leaves Out on This Page
The SP3 Softball page is thinner on hardware than its siblings and this page says so plainly. Jugs publishes no power source, no tire size, no motor rating, no chute size, no weight, no feed rate and no dimensions for the SP3 Softball. It does state a 20-year life expectancy, without naming the component that figure applies to; on the BP3 Softball the same 20-year figure is attached to the Grip-Tite tires. Do not assume the BP3's 12 in. Grip-Tite tires, its three 1/4 HP motors or its Long Feed Chute are on this machine. Ask Jugs.

Three Things the SP3 Softball Is Built to Do

Jugs SP3 softball pitching machine Pinpoint micro-adjustment dials
Location

Black to Black Without Moving the Machine

Run a hitting station off this machine and the whole session happens at the dials. Jugs states that Pinpoint adjusts pitch location horizontally or vertically for black-to-black accuracy, and that the adjustment is instant. In practice that means the coach never leaves the plate: outside corner for a round, inside corner for a round, then down in the zone to work on the low drop. Every hitter in the group sees the identical location, which is the only way a coach can tell whether a swing change is working or whether the pitch simply moved. Jugs describes the system as patented and states it is the reason the SP3 Softball is a multi-station machine for hitting facilities.

  • Pinpoint micro-adjustment system, horizontal and vertical
  • Black-to-black accuracy as Jugs describes it
  • Instant adjustment without repositioning the machine
  • Realistic delivery height replicating a live pitcher's angle
  • Published on the SP3 Softball and the BP3 Softball only

Dial Speed, Select-A-Pitch, Go

Jugs reduces the operation of the SP3 Softball to three steps and states this is the easiest to use high-end three-wheel pitching machine on the market today. Seven pitch types sit on the dial and all seven are named: fastballs, right and left-handed curves and screwballs, risers and drops. Between rounds a coach turns one dial and the machine throws a different pitch shape at whatever speed the other dial is set to. Both the riseball and the drop matter to a fastpitch hitter more than any other pair, because they finish at opposite ends of the strike zone from the same release, and the SP3 puts them one click apart.

  • Fastballs, risers and drops
  • Right and left-handed curves
  • Right and left-handed screwballs

Tilt, Roll, and Four Kinds of Ball

Jugs states the transport cart allows tilt-and-roll movement on and off the field, which is how a machine of this class gets from the shed to the cage and back before the field is watered. The ball list Jugs publishes for the SP3 Softball has four entries: LeatherLast softballs, low impact multi-use practice softballs, realistic-seam Sting-Free softballs and dimpled Sting-Free softballs. That list is shorter than what RFA previously advertised, which added Lite-Flite, SOFTIE and BULLDOG softballs. Those three are not named by Jugs for this machine and are not claimed here.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The speed range is identical at 45-75 mph, so the difference is elsewhere. The SP3 throws 7 pitch types, all seven named by Jugs, and has no changeup. The BP3 throws 8 pitches, adds remote-control changeups and automatic pitching circuits that run programmed fastball and changeup sequences, and carries a 3 in. LCD display, which Jugs does not publish for the SP3. Both use Pinpoint micro-adjustment.
Fastballs, right and left-handed curves, right and left-handed screwballs, risers and drops. Jugs names all seven on the SP3 Softball page. That is unusual in this group: the BP3 Softball states eight pitches but names only some, and the mini3 Softball states seven and names five shapes.
Jugs' patented system for moving where the pitch crosses the plate. It adjusts pitch location horizontally or vertically, instantly, without repositioning the machine, and Jugs describes the result as black-to-black accuracy. It is published on the SP3 Softball and the BP3 Softball. The mini3 Softball adjusts pitch elevation and angle, which is a different and less precise system, and Jugs does not use the Pinpoint name there.
No. Jugs publishes no changeup, no remote and no automatic circuit for the SP3 Softball. Speed is set at the machine. If mid-round speed changes are the requirement, the BP3 Softball at the same 45-75 mph, or the single-wheel Changeup Super Softball at 70 mph down to 44 mph, are the two machines in this set that do it.
Jugs names four: LeatherLast softballs, low impact multi-use practice softballs, realistic-seam Sting-Free softballs and dimpled Sting-Free softballs. RFA's earlier page also listed Lite-Flite, SOFTIE and BULLDOG softballs for this machine. Those three are not named by Jugs for the SP3 Softball, so ask before buying them for it.
Jugs publishes no power source on the SP3 Softball page. The BP1 Softball and mini3 Softball both name 110V AC and a BLUETTI AC70P portable power station, but that does not carry across to this model on the manufacturer's own information. Confirm the electrical requirement with Jugs before planning an off-grid setup.
Jugs does not publish a display for the SP3 Softball. RFA's older page said the SP3 has an LCD display and that speed is set by turning a knob. The knob and the speed dial are consistent with Jugs' own dial-speed-and-go description, but the LCD is unconfirmed on this model. Jugs publishes a 3 in. LCD on the BP3 Softball.
Jugs publishes neither for the SP3 Softball. It is a three-wheel machine, but the page does not give a tire size or a motor rating. Do not assume the BP3 Softball's 12 in. Grip-Tite tires and three 1/4 HP motors apply here. What Jugs does state for the SP3 is a 20-year life expectancy, without naming the component.
Jugs states the transport cart allows tilt-and-roll movement on and off the field and presents the cart as part of the product. No machine weight is published, so a one-person move is not something to plan around until you have that figure.
Jugs states the SP3 Softball has a realistic delivery height that replicates a live pitcher's angle for better timing. No figure in inches is published for this or any other machine in this softball set, so set the machine against your own pitcher's release before the first round.
That is the case Jugs makes for it. The combination of a fixed setup, Pinpoint location control and a 7-pitch dial means one machine covers accurate pitches and strike-zone work across a rotation of hitters without being repositioned between them.
Jugs publishes no chute size for the SP3 Softball. The BP3 Softball lists a Long Feed Chute as standard, and the BP1 Softball is the only machine in this set with an inch figure, at 12 in. with an 11 in. chute sold separately. If your program plays the 11 in. ball, raise it with Jugs before ordering.
