Impact-Resistant Massage Gun

Theragun Prime Percussion Massager

The Theragun Prime is a massage gun from Therabody that stands up to a gym bag: an impact-resistant rubber shell with reinforced corners is rated for drops up to 10 feet. The head travels 16mm on each stroke, as deep as any Theragun goes. Five speeds cycle from one button, and lights on the handle show how hard you press. It weighs 907 g and runs 120 minutes on a charge. The Standard Ball and Dampener heads come in the box with a USB-C cable. It is FDA Registered and HSA/FSA Accepted, with a 1-year limited warranty.

Durability is the whole argument for choosing this particular Theragun. The rubber exterior takes the first hit and the reinforced corners take the rest, and the 10 foot figure comes from repeated drop testing against every earlier Theragun. What the Prime adds for the money is a live pressure display. LED lights on the handle climb as you lean in and drop back as you ease off, so a steady pressure is something you can hold through a whole muscle group without guessing at it.

A rechargeable battery gives 120 minutes and fills over the USB-C cable in the box. The Prime is FDA Registered, which is an establishment listing with the agency and not a review of safety or effectiveness. It is also HSA/FSA Accepted, and your plan administrator has the last word on any individual claim. A 1-year limited warranty from Therabody comes with the device. Bluetooth pairs it to Coach in the Therabody app, which adds guided routines and wearable integration.

Key Features

Key features

A 16mm stroke runs behind a rubber shell with reinforced corners and the patented triangle grip. LED indicators on the handle show how hard you are pressing while it works.

A 16mm stroke from a single button
In percussive therapy the head moves in and out against the muscle at speed, and how far it travels on each pass is what your body reads as depth. The Prime travels 16mm, which is as deep as any Theragun goes. One button cycles the five speeds in order and holds the one you stop on. There is no screen to learn and no menu to walk through before a session starts.
16mm depth - 5 speeds
An impact-resistant shell with reinforced corners
The outer surface is rubber and the corners underneath it are reinforced, and that build earns the rating for drops up to 10 feet. That rating comes from repeated drop testing against every previous Theragun model. A massage gun that lives in a bag gets knocked about far more than one that lives on a shelf. This body is the answer to that, and it is the reason to pick the Prime over a lighter shell.
Drops up to 10 feet
Pressure you can see as you press
Real-time pressure feedback is built into the handle. LED indicators light up as you push the head into a muscle and fall back as you take the weight off, so the force you are applying stays visible while you work. The row sits beside the single button, in the eyeline of the hand already holding the device. It is the one reading a screen would otherwise have to give you, on a device that has no screen.
Live pressure display
The patented triangle grip
Therabody's patented triangle grip is the shape of the whole handle, not a pad stuck on one face of it. That geometry is what gets the head between your own shoulder blades without a second person holding it. Two attachment heads ship with the Prime and both mount on the same shaft, so swapping them mid-session takes a second.

The body

Why the shell matters more than the motor

Massage guns very rarely die of overwork, and a motor is not usually what fails first. They die on a tiled changing-room floor, or on a driveway, or under a car seat. The Prime answers that with an impact-resistant rubber exterior over reinforced corners, and that combination withstands drops up to 10 feet after repeated drop testing against every earlier Theragun. What the Prime offers is that construction at the simpler end of the line, with a single button in place of a heated head.

  • Impact-resistant rubber exterior
  • Reinforced corners under the shell
  • A body rated to survive a 10 foot fall
  • Rating based on repeated drop testing against previous Theragun models
  • Patented triangle grip running the length of the handle

Control

Reading the lights while you work

One button on the handle runs this entire device from end to end. Press it to wake the Prime, press it again to step through five massage speeds, and hold it to switch off. Beside that button sits the part people notice on their second session: a row of LED indicators that reports how much pressure you are putting through the head in real time. Lean in and the lights climb. Ease off and they fall. It gives you the same information a screen would, on a device that has no screen to charge, crack or learn.

  • One button for power and for all five speeds
  • LED indicators that show applied pressure as you work
  • Speeds held until you change them
  • No display to navigate before a session
  • Bluetooth to Coach in the Therabody app, with wearable integration

What's Included

Two heads and what each one is for

The Prime ships with two attachment heads and they cover most of what a person needs. The Standard Ball is the general-purpose head for large muscle groups, quads and glutes and hamstrings. The Dampener is the softer one, shaped for tender areas and for working close to bone. Five more classic heads are sold one at a time and all of them fit: the Large Ball, the Cone, the Thumb, the Wedge and the Supersoft.

How it compares

Every Theragun in the range drives a head against the muscle, and the differences lie in how deep the stroke goes, how the controls work and how much else travels in the same handle.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Four items. The Theragun Prime itself, a Standard Ball attachment, a Dampener attachment and a USB-C charging cable. Two attachment heads in total, which covers large muscle groups and tender areas between them. Extra heads are bought one at a time.
Seven classic heads fit it: Standard Ball, Dampener, Large Ball, Cone, Thumb, Wedge and Supersoft. The first two arrive in the box, so the other five are the ones you would be adding.
A rechargeable battery inside the handle gives 120 minutes per charge, filled over the USB-C cable in the box. Charged between sessions, that covers most of a week of daily use. Nothing else about the device needs power.
The foam heads are the consumable part. Change them every 60 to 90 days, depending on how much use they see. Wipe the shell and the fitted head down when a session ends, and keep the USB-C port clear of lint from the bag it lives in. The rubber exterior takes soap and water on a cloth.
How hard you are pushing the head into the muscle, live, on a row of LED indicators beside the button. The lights climb as you lean in and drop as you back off. It is a guide to consistency more than a target to chase, and the reading moves the instant you change how hard you lean.
The Prime is a full-size device at 907 g with a 16mm stroke. Heat in the same pass comes with the Theragun Prime Plus, the same 16mm stroke with a heated head in the box and the Plus attachment range behind it. A calmer session with routines on a screen is the Theragun Sense G2, and the Theragun Mini range is the travel-size option.
The Prime is FDA Registered. Registration means the establishment and the device are listed with the agency; it is an administrative listing and it is not a review of safety or effectiveness. It is a different thing from FDA clearance, which this device does not hold. It is also HSA/FSA Accepted, though your plan administrator has the final say on any individual claim, and Therabody backs it with a 1-year limited warranty.
Yes. Recovery For Athletes is an authorized Therabody dealer, so the manufacturer warranty applies and you can register the product in your own name.
