In the early 1990s, our founder and CEO, Dr. Kichul Cha, recognized that the available BIA devices were limited and faulty. They were often inaccurate, and from a medical standpoint, useless for treating patients who needed body composition analysis the most. Drawing from his background in mechanical engineering, he set to work to design something better.
In 1996, he founded InBody. Two years later, the first InBody device was born. Today, InBody has grown from a small biotech startup in South Korea to a multinational corporation with branches and distributors in more than 80 countries. Our clients trust us to provide precise, useful, and accurate body composition data to their users because they know that InBody combines convenience, accuracy, and reproducibility into one easy-to-use device.
What Does Body Composition Mean?
Health professionals employ body composition to assess an individual's weight by segregating it into fundamental components: fat, protein, minerals, and body water. This method provides a more precise reflection of healthy weight and offers a clearer insight into overall health compared to traditional indicators like BMI & weight. An analysis of body composition effectively indicates variations in fat mass, lean muscle mass, and body fat percentage.
What's the Significance of Measuring Body Composition?
Many fitness and dietary objectives revolve around weight loss or gain. However, it's essential to recognize that two individuals of identical gender and weight can appear drastically different due to varying body compositions. By assessing body composition, one can understand their body's distinct structure and pinpoint areas that need enhancement to boost overall health and wellness.
To obtain a comprehensive understanding of overall well-being, it's pivotal to measure body composition, transcending mere scale readings. It guides individuals on whether they should aim for an increase in lean mass or a reduction in body fat percentage to attain optimal health and body composition.
How Does InBody Technology Stand Out?
Ordinary BIA technology perceives the human body as a singular cylinder utilizing one frequency, which can lead to potential inaccuracies. Typical BIA devices apply empirical predictions grounded in attributes like age and gender to enhance precision. Though this might be suitable for those fitting a standard physique, it doesn't hold true for outliers, such as fit senior citizens.
Every individual possesses a distinctive body composition. Recognizing this, InBody introduces groundbreaking technology crafted for individuals rather than a collective. The medical-grade body composition analyzers of InBody rely on four foundational technological pillars to deliver accurate, direct segmental measurement multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (DSM-MFBIA), a method thoroughly verified against gold-standard techniques.
Defining Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) serves as a technique to gauge body composition, encompassing muscle mass, body fat, and total body water. It operates by transmitting alternating low and high-frequency electric currents across the body's water content via electrode contact, to evaluate impedance.
This impedance is crucial for determining total body water (TBW). From this, one can extrapolate fat-free mass—components of the body excluding fat, such as muscle and bone—and, subsequently, body fat.
