Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress

A 14-inch luxury hybrid built around back pain, cooling, and overnight recovery.

The Elite Hybrid is Bear's flagship — a 14-inch, eight-layer hybrid mattress that pairs three pressure-relieving foam layers with an 8-inch zoned coil core. Underneath the Celliant® infrared cover, copper-infused memory foam draws heat away from the body while a five-zone individually wrapped coil system reinforces the lumbar region. It's the bed Wired named the best mattress for back pain, and it carries an endorsement from the American Chiropractic Association for spinal alignment in every sleep position.

The hybrid construction is the difference. All-foam mattresses contour deeply but trap heat and feel less responsive over time. The Elite Hybrid uses individually wrapped coils — five zones tuned for different parts of the body, with reinforced edges — to add lift, airflow, and edge-to-edge stability that pure-foam beds can't match. Above the coils, three foam layers handle the contouring: copper-infused memory foam at the top for pressure relief and cooling, responsive comfort foam to prevent the sinking feeling, and a dynamic transition foam that dampens motion from the coils so partner movement doesn't transfer.

Choose Soft, Medium, or Firm at checkout — Bear's the rare hybrid maker that offers all three feels in the same construction. Optional Phase Change Material (PCM) cooling upgrade for hot sleepers. The Elite Hybrid earned Good Housekeeping's Overall Best Hybrid Mattress, Forbes' Best Mattress for Back and Hip Pain, Oprah Daily's Overall Best Mattress, Architectural Digest's Best Mattress in a Box for Chronic Pain, and a 10/10 cooling score from NapLab. Free shipping. 120-night home trial. Limited lifetime warranty.

The Sleep Recovery Stack

Three systems doing three different jobs.

The Elite Hybrid's eight layers organize into three working systems: a recovery-focused cover, a pressure-relief foam comfort core, and a zoned coil support core. Each system addresses a problem the others can't.

♨️
Celliant® Infrared Recovery
The cover is woven with Celliant fibers — a textile classified by the FDA as a medical device and general wellness product. The fibers absorb body heat and re-emit it as infrared energy intended to support local circulation and overnight muscle recovery. Same wavelengths used in clinical recovery panels, integrated directly into the mattress surface. Not a gimmick layer — it's the same technology Bear builds across the entire lineup.

Copper-Infused Cooling System
Below the cover, copper-infused memory foam contours to your shoulders, hips, and lower back while actively pulling heat away from the contact zone. Copper is a high-thermal-conductivity metal — it disperses heat faster than gel infusions. Combined with the airflow gap created by the coil core below and the optional Phase Change Material (PCM) upgrade, the Elite Hybrid earned a 10/10 cooling score from NapLab.

🏗️
Zoned Coil Support Core
The 8-inch base of the mattress is an individually wrapped coil system tuned in five zones — softer where your shoulders sit, firmer through the lumbar region, reinforced at the edges. The result: targeted lumbar lift that holds the spine in neutral alignment and edge-to-edge structural stability. The American Chiropractic Association endorses the Elite Hybrid for spinal alignment in every sleep position.

Inside the Build

Eight layers, top to bottom.

The Elite Hybrid is engineered as an eight-layer stack. Here's what each system contributes to the overall feel.

♨️ Layers One & Two

Quilted Celliant® Infrared Cover + Quilt Foam

The top of the mattress is a quilted cover woven with Celliant fibers — minerals that absorb body heat and re-emit it as infrared energy. The FDA classifies Celliant products as medical devices and general wellness products. Below the cover, a quilt foam layer adds initial surface softness and cushions your joints on contact, letting your body settle into position without the firmness of the deeper foam layers reading through.

  • Celliant® infrared cover — converts body heat to infrared energy
  • FDA-classified general wellness product (medical device, section 201(h))
  • Quilt foam adds plush surface cushioning at first contact
  • Optional Phase Change Material (PCM) cooling layer add-on

❄️ Layer Three

Copper-Infused Memory Foam

The first deep comfort layer is memory foam infused with copper. Copper has high thermal conductivity — it pulls heat away from contact points faster than the gel infusions used in lower-tier mattresses. The foam still contours like memory foam (cradling shoulders, hips, lower back), but the trapped-heat penalty that traditional memory foam is known for is largely engineered out. Combined with the open coil core below, this is the cooling layer that earned the Elite Hybrid a 10/10 cooling score from NapLab.

  • Copper-infused memory foam — actively dissipates heat at pressure points
  • Higher thermal conductivity than gel-infused alternatives
  • Contours to shoulders, hips, and lower back without trapping warmth
  • 10/10 cooling rating from NapLab

Responsive Comfort + Dynamic Transition Foam

Two transition layers most mattresses skip. Responsive comfort foam adds a slight bounce that prevents the quicksand feel some all-foam beds have, lifting and reinforcing the layers above. Below it, dynamic transition foam acts as a buffer between the foam comfort system and the coil support core — its specific job is to dampen motion transfer from the coils, which is why partner movement doesn't read through to your side of the bed. Together they keep the mattress responsive without sacrificing the cradling comfort layer.

  • Responsive comfort foam — adds bounce, prevents excessive sinking
  • Dynamic transition foam — dampens motion from the coils below
  • Critical for couples — minimizes partner-movement disturbance
  • Maintains the firmness rating you selected at checkout

🏗️ Layer Six

8-Inch Zoned Ascension Coils

The structural heart of the Elite Hybrid: 8 inches of individually wrapped coils, divided into five zones tuned for different body regions. Softer coils through the shoulder zone, firmer coils through the lumbar zone, reinforced perimeter coils for edge-to-edge stability. Individually wrapped means each coil moves independently — they isolate motion the way an interconnected innerspring can't. The American Chiropractic Association reviewed and endorsed this construction for promoting spinal alignment in back, side, and combination sleep positions.

  • 8" of individually wrapped coils — independent point-of-contact response
  • Five-zone construction — softer at shoulders, firmer through lumbar
  • Reinforced perimeter coils — edge-to-edge support, no roll-off
  • American Chiropractic Association-endorsed for spinal alignment
  • Improves airflow vs. all-foam construction

DuraDense Base Foam

The coil system rests on Bear's DuraDense base foam — a high-density foundation foam that stabilizes the coils above. The base foam keeps the coils from compressing into the floor or platform below, distributes weight evenly across the support core, and prevents the body-shaped impressions that develop in cheaper hybrids over years of use. This is the layer that makes the limited lifetime warranty viable: without it, the coil system would lose structural integrity within a few years.

  • DuraDense high-density foam — coil-stabilizing foundation layer
  • Distributes weight evenly across the support core
  • Resists body-shaped impressions over years of use

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Answers to what most buyers ask before ordering the Elite Hybrid.

Both share the Celliant® infrared cover, copper-infused memory foam, and the five-zone wrapped coil core. Key differences: Phase Change Material (PCM) cooling is included as standard on the Elite Ultra (optional upgrade on the Elite Hybrid), and the Elite Ultra adds a microcoil layer on top of the foam comfort system for enhanced adaptability and surface response. If maximum cooling and the most responsive feel are priorities, step up to the Elite Ultra. If you want flagship comfort with optional PCM cooling at a lower price point, the Elite Hybrid is the choice.
Three things working together. The five-zone wrapped coil system provides targeted lumbar lift — softer coils where your shoulders sit, firmer coils through the lumbar region — which holds the spine in neutral alignment regardless of sleep position. The contouring memory foam above evenly distributes pressure across the body so no single joint is bearing concentrated load. And the responsive transition foams keep the comfort system supportive without letting you sink so deep the spine bows. The combination earned the Elite Hybrid Wired's "Best Mattress for Back Pain" designation, Forbes' "Best Mattress for Back and Hip Pain," and Architectural Digest's "Best Mattress in a Box for Chronic Pain." The mattress is also endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association for spinal alignment in every sleep position.
Yes — NapLab gave the Elite Hybrid a 10/10 cooling score, the highest in their category. Cooling comes from three sources working together: copper-infused memory foam actively pulls heat away from contact points (copper has high thermal conductivity, faster than gel infusions); the open coil core below allows airflow that's impossible in all-foam construction; and the temperature-regulating cover wicks moisture and surface heat. For sleepers who run especially hot, the optional Phase Change Material (PCM) cooling layer adds another active cooling layer that absorbs excess heat at the surface.
Soft (around 5/10): deeper contouring, more memory-foam-like cradle. Best for strict side sleepers under 200 lbs and people with shoulder/hip sensitivity who want to feel embraced by the bed. Medium (around 6.5/10): the most-recommended option, fits most back and combination sleepers. The default if you're not sure. Firm (around 7.5–8/10): minimal sink, more "on top of the bed" feel. Best for stomach sleepers, sleepers over 230 lbs, and anyone who finds memory foam too soft. If you tend to prefer the firmer end of medium, sizing up to Firm is a reasonable call.
PCM stands for Phase Change Material — a temperature-regulating substance that absorbs and releases heat as it shifts between physical phases. In the Elite Hybrid, the PCM upgrade adds a layer that absorbs excess body heat at the surface and releases it as you cool down, holding the surface temperature in a comfortable range longer than passive cooling alone. It's worth the upgrade if you're a hot sleeper, live in a warm climate, or share the bed with a partner whose body heat raises the surface temperature. The base Elite Hybrid is already cooling; PCM is the next-level cooling addition for sleepers who want maximum thermal regulation.
A firm, flat, sturdy foundation. Compatible: a platform bed, a slatted frame with slats spaced less than 5.5 inches apart, a foundation, or an adjustable base. Not compatible: a traditional box spring, or any frame with slats spaced wider than 5.5 inches — the foam can sag through the gaps over time and may void the warranty. The 14" profile means you'll want to factor in total height when pairing with a frame — bed height plus 14" mattress can be tall.
Best for: sleepers with chronic or recurring back pain (especially lumbar), hot sleepers who need active cooling, side and back sleepers with sensitive shoulders and hips, couples (motion-damping foam minimizes partner-disturbance), and active people who want overnight recovery support. Less ideal for: sleepers who want the deep, slow contouring of an all-foam mattress (the Pro Foam or Original would be a better fit) and heavier sleepers who sleep strictly on their stomach (consider the Firm option specifically). If you sleep cold, the cooling system can be more than you need — the Original Hybrid is a more budget-friendly choice without the full cooling stack.
120 nights of in-home use. Bear requires a 30-night break-in period before initiating a return — this is standard for foam-based mattresses, which feel different in the first couple weeks while the body adjusts and the foam fully decompresses. After night 30 and before night 120, email returns@bearmattress.com to start a return. Bear arranges pickup at no cost and issues a full refund. Past 120 nights, the limited lifetime warranty kicks in for manufacturing defects.
Yes — Bear partners with Truemed for HSA/FSA eligibility on qualifying customers. If you have a qualifying medical condition where a mattress upgrade is supported (chronic back pain, sleep disorders, certain inflammatory conditions, etc.), you may be able to use pre-tax HSA/FSA funds. Truemed runs the qualification during checkout. Customers typically save around 30% by paying with pre-tax dollars. Eligibility depends on individual medical circumstances.
Bear mattresses are assembled in the USA from foreign and domestic components, at Bear's facility in Arizona. The Elite Hybrid is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low chemical emissions, uses CertiPUR-US® certified foam (verified free of formaldehyde, ozone depleters, prohibited phthalates, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals), and meets federal mattress flammability regulations (16 CFR 1633 and 1632) without using fiberglass.
