Chattanooga Hydrocollator

Chattanooga Hydrocollator Mobile Heating Unit

The Chattanooga Hydrocollator Mobile Heating Unit is a stainless steel hot pack heating unit on casters, a water tank that keeps a constant supply of Hydrocollator HotPacs at 160 to 165 F through the working day. A thermostat holds that band, and an automatic shut-off cuts in if the water level drops. There is no plumbing: the tank is filled and drained by hand, and it rolls to wherever the packs are needed. Three sizes cover a single room up to a busy department. The 10 gal SS-2 arrives with 8 Standard HotPacs and the 27 gal M-4 with 24, each set ready to heat on day one.

All three models run on 110 to 120 V, 50/60 Hz at 1000 W, with an internal 15 amp fuse and fiberglass insulation, and all three stand 33 in. tall. The M-2 holds about 14 gal (52 L) with 12 packs.

Filled, the SS-2 weighs 140 lb, the M-2 190 lb and the M-4 340 lb, against dry weights of 66 lb, 48 lb and 132 lb. All three units are Class 1, Type B, certified to UL 60601-1 and Can/CSA C222 No. 601.1.

The tank

How it works

Every mobile model shares the heater, the thermostat and the insulation, and only the tank size and the pack set change from one to the next.

Held at 160 to 165 F
A thermostat holds the water in that band, with a thermal cut-out at 180 to 185 F above it and temperature accuracy of +/- 10 percent, for consistent heat delivery pack after pack.
Cut-out 180-185 F
Low-water shut-off
An automatic shut-off cuts in if the water level becomes too low. The stainless steel tank has no plumbing connection at all and is filled and drained by hand.
No plumbing
Warm-up by model
The SS-2 reaches 160 F in 4 hours, the shortest warm-up of the three mobile units and the one that suits a clinic starting the tank on the morning of a session. The M-2 and M-4 take 8 hours, which in practice means the unit is switched on the night before a clinic day and left on through it.
4 or 8 hours
Insulated stainless steel
Fiberglass insulation lines all three mobile tanks, inside a stainless steel cabinet that is durable, easy to maintain and built for long-term daily use in busy clinics.

Each unit arrives with its own set of Standard HotPacs for immediate use.
Cool-down window
Cool-down from 160 F is 4 hours SS-2, 3 hours M-2 and 4 hours M-4, the window for draining and cleaning.
Hospital grade outlet
A hospital grade electrical outlet with a ground terminal receptacle is required. 1000 W, 110 to 120 V, internal 15 amp fuse.
Built for clinic use
Physical therapy clinics, sports medicine and athletic training rooms, chiropractic offices and rehabilitation centers.
A cover on every pack
Always wrap a HotPac in a towel or terry cover before handling it or applying it to a patient.

Warranty term
One year, twelve months, from the date of original consumer purchase, on all three mobile models.

Choosing a model

Matching the tank to the caseload

How many packs a clinic keeps hot at once points to the model, and the supplied sets of 8, 12 and 24 packs grow with the tank. Filled, the M-4 weighs 340 lb on its casters.

  • SS-2: 10 gal (37 L), 21 x 16 x 33 in., 66 lb dry, 140 lb filled, 8 Standard HotPacs
  • M-2: approx 14 gal (52 L), 27 x 16 x 33 in., 48 lb dry, 190 lb filled, 12 Standard HotPacs
  • M-4: approx 27 gal (102 L), 35 x 20 x 33 in., 132 lb dry, 340 lb filled, 24 Standard HotPacs
  • Heat-up to 160 F: 4 hours SS-2, 8 hours M-2 and M-4

Fitment

Which HotPacs go in the tank

The Hydrocollator HotPacs come in seven shapes plus a Hand size, and they are heated in these tanks. Only the Standard 10 x 12 in. size ships with a mobile unit. A neck contour, spinal or oversize pack is a separate order with covers to match. The 8, 12 and 24 figures are the sets supplied, and an Oversize pack takes considerably more of the tank than a Standard one.

  • Standard 10 x 12 in., the size supplied with all three units
  • Oversize 15 x 24 in. and Knee and Shoulder 10 x 20 in. for the larger surfaces
  • Spinal 10 x 18 in. and Spinal large 10 x 24 in. for the length of the back
  • Neck Contour 24 in., Half 5 x 12 in. and Hand 6.5 x 12.5 in. for the smaller ones
  • Foam filled terry covers and all-terry microfiber covers
Standard supplied Mixed sizes heated Hand size too

The range

How it compares

The family holds two moist-heat water baths and a dry-heat cabinet: the water baths differ in whether they stand on the floor or on a bench, and Fluidotherapy holds an extremity in heated cellulose media.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Work from the pack count. The sets supplied are 8 Standard HotPacs with the SS-2, 12 with the M-2 and 24 with the M-4, on tanks of 10 gal, approximately 14 gal and approximately 27 gal, all three on casters.

Every HotPac size: Standard 10 x 12 in., Oversize 15 x 24 in., Spinal 10 x 18 in., Spinal large 10 x 24 in., Knee and Shoulder 10 x 20 in., Neck Contour 24 in., Half 5 x 12 in. and Hand 6.5 x 12.5 in. Only the Standard size ships with a mobile unit, and the rest are separate purchases from the HotPac range. A tank holds a mix of sizes at once, and an Oversize pack takes considerably more tank volume than a Standard one.

SS-2 4 hours, M-2 8 hours, M-4 8 hours to reach 160 F. Cool-down from 160 F is 4 hours, 3 hours and 4 hours respectively.

Always wrap a HotPac in a towel or terry cover before handling it or applying it to a patient, and DO NOT apply a HotPac directly to skin. Covers belong on the same order. The foam filled terry covers come in standard 19 x 27 in., standard 17 x 27 in., neck contour 25 x 16 in. and oversize 24 x 36 in., with or without pockets, and the all-terry microfiber covers in standard 19 x 27 in., neck contour 25 x 18 in. and oversize 24 x 36 in.

Do not apply a HotPac directly to skin. Do not apply over insensitive skin or in the presence of poor circulation. Do not use a HotPac directly over cuts, abrasions or wounds. Treatment time should not exceed 30 minutes, and a health care professional should be consulted before using HotPacs on non-communicative individuals.

A hospital grade electrical outlet with a ground terminal receptacle, which Chattanooga requires on all three models. Power is 1000 W at 110 to 120 V, 50/60 Hz, with an internal 15 amp fuse. There is also a risk of explosion if a unit is used in the presence of flammable anesthetics, so site the tank and its outlet well clear of any such store.

No plumbing. The tank is filled and drained by hand, so water changes are a manual job on whatever schedule your clinic sets, and the unit goes wherever there is a suitable outlet and a route to a sink. Let the tank cool before you drain it, put no chlorine additive in the water, and never retrieve a pack from the tank or replace one in it with an unprotected hand.

Yes. All three mobile models stand on casters, and the footprint measures 21 x 16 in. on the SS-2, 27 x 16 in. on the M-2 and 35 x 20 in. on the M-4, at a 33 in. cabinet height. Drain and cool the tank before a move.

One year, twelve months, from the date of original consumer purchase, with repair or replacement without charge within thirty days for a covered defect. It excludes misuse, unauthorised repair and failure to maintain the unit as instructed.

The E-1 and E-2 tabletop units hold 3 gal and 8 gal, ship with 4 and 6 packs, and have no casters, sitting on a bench or on the MB stainless steel cart. The mobile units start at 10 gal and 8 packs and move on their own wheels. Where more than one treatment room draws from the same tank, the mobile units are the ones sized for it, starting with the SS-2 at 10 gal and 140 lb filled.
