Should I get the Ice Barrel 300, 400 or 500?
Each Ice Barrel is unique in its own way. When considering which is best for
you, consider climate, accessibility and how you will use the barrel. The
300 is shorter and wider, so it is easier to enter and exit without using a
step stool. The 300 is also fully insulated, so it might be a good choice
for those who live in warmer climates. The 400 is taller and larger, so it
allows for a more relaxed upright position — especially if you are over 6
foot 2 inches or 250 pounds. The 500 is the largest, comfortably fitting
most body types up to 7 feet tall. It’s also fully insulated for performance
in warm climates and comes chiller ready without modification.
Will I fit?
The Ice Barrel 300 comfortably fits most body types up to 6’2″ and 250 lbs.
The Ice Barrel 400 comfortably fits most body types up to 6’6″ and 300 lbs,
while the Ice Barrel 500 comfortably fits most body types up to 7′ and 300
lbs.
How do I clean and maintain the Ice Barrel?
The Ice Barrel requires very little maintenance. It has an easy-to-use
drainage system that connects to a standard garden hose. We recommend
changing the water every four weeks or as preferred. You can keep your water
cleaner by using a water stabilizer. We recommend our maintenance kit, which
includes everything you’ll need to keep your Ice Barrel clean and
functional.
Is the Ice Barrel 500 made for gyms?
The Ice Barrel 500 was designed to be accessible and effective for many body
types and uses. It’s large enough to comfortably fit nearly all body types,
fully insulated for superior performance and has integrated steps and
seating for convenience. In other words, it’s ideal for homes, gyms,
backyards, spas and many other uses.
Can I put it on a balcony?
The Ice Barrel 500 will fit through standard (31-inch) doors, so it’s a
great option for people with limited space. Keep in mind that while the Ice
Barrel 500 is only 104 lbs when empty, it weighs nearly 900 pounds when
full, so make sure your space can safely support its full weight.
What if I don’t have a chiller?
We recommend the
Penguin Chillers Barrel Cold Therapy Chiller, specifcally designed to work with the Ice Barrel. While the Ice Barrel
500 has easy connects for chillers, it can just as easily be used with ice.
Simply plug the inlet port at the top of the barrel (the plug is included
with your purchase) then fill with water and ice to reach your desired
temperature.
How long does it take to set up?
The Ice Barrel 500 arrives fully assembled — no tools required. Setup is as
simple as placing it in your desired location, attaching a garden hose to
fill it, and you're ready to go. Most customers are up and running within 30
minutes of delivery.
Can I use the Ice Barrel 500 outdoors year-round?
Yes. The Ice Barrel 500 is built for outdoor use and holds up in a range of
climates. Its full insulation helps maintain cold temperatures in warm
weather. In freezing temperatures, we recommend draining the barrel when not
in use to prevent water from freezing inside.
What temperature should the water be?
Most cold therapy practitioners recommend water temperatures between 39°F
and 55°F (4°C–13°C). Beginners may want to start on the warmer end and work
down over time. With ice alone, water temperature will vary based on the
amount of ice used and ambient temperature.
How much ice does it take to cool the water without a chiller?
The Ice Barrel 500 holds approximately 105 gallons of water. To drop the
water temperature significantly, expect to use 30–50 lbs of ice depending on
your starting water temperature and desired target. The full insulation
helps maintain temperature once cooled, reducing how often you need to add
ice.
How long should I stay in the Ice Barrel?
Most cold therapy protocols suggest starting with 2–3 minutes and working up
to 10–15 minutes as your body adapts. Always listen to your body and exit
immediately if you feel lightheaded, numbness, or extreme discomfort.
Consult a healthcare provider before starting cold therapy if you have any
cardiovascular conditions.
Is the Ice Barrel 500 safe for daily use?
Many users plunge daily without issue. Recovery needs and cold tolerance
vary by individual, so we recommend starting 2–3 times per week and
adjusting based on how your body responds. There's no harm in daily use for
most healthy adults.
