The BP3 shares its three-wheel platform with the SP3. What it adds is one pitch, one display and one button, and this is what each of them does.

The Ninth Pitch Is a Changeup

Eight of the BP3's pitches are dial positions, set before the round starts. The ninth is different: Jugs states the machine throws changeups at the push of a button, using a handheld remote, so the speed drops between pitches while the dial stays where it was. The hitter has no cue. There is no arm slowing down, no grip to read, no change in what the machine looks like. Jugs describes it as instantly switching speeds without the hitter knowing, replicating real pitcher deception. A machine that throws one speed teaches timing for one speed, and this is the machine that stops that from happening.

Nine on the Select-A-Pitch Dial

Jugs lists nine preset pitches: fastballs and changeups, right- and left-handed curveballs and sliders, right- and left-handed cutters and split-finger fastballs. Right- and left-handed versions matter more than the raw count. A right-handed hitter reads a right-handed slider moving away and a left-handed slider moving in, and those are two different at-bats. Nine positions cover both handedness for three breaking pitches, plus the fastball, the split-finger and the changeup.

A Large LCD Display

Jugs publishes a large LCD display on the BP3, showing the set speed across the 40-90 mph range so a coach reads the number straight off the machine. One note on honesty: older Recovery For Athletes copy called this a 3 in. LCD. Jugs' current page does not restate that measurement, so we do not print it. What is published is that the display is large and that the speed is set by turning a knob.

What the BP3 Will Feed

Jugs publishes eight ball types for the BP3: baseballs, JUGS Pearl, JUGS Youth League Pearl, Sting-Free Baseballs, Maximum Velocity Sting-Free Baseballs, Lite-Flite Baseballs, Softie Baseballs and Bulldog Polyballs. Read that list before you buy training balls, because it is the manufacturer's own statement of what this machine handles, and it is not the same list on every machine here. The SP3 publishes the same eight. Jugs publishes a shorter list on the BP1 and the Changeup Baseball, and publishes no ball-type list at all on the BP2 or the mini3, which is why those two pages do not carry one.

Jugs states the BP3 instantly switches speeds without the hitter knowing, replicating real pitcher deception with a handheld remote. That is a drill no fixed-speed machine can run. A hitter who has taken two hundred swings against a machine has learned exactly when to start, and a machine that never varies rewards that learning without testing it. The remote sits with the coach, so the decision to throw the changeup is made after the hitter has already set his weight. The Changeup Baseball machine runs the same idea on one wheel at 70 mph down to 44 mph; the BP3 runs it inside a nine-pitch dial at up to 90 mph.

Nine positions, one more than the SP3, and the extra one is the changeup. Location is handled separately: Jugs states the BP3 instantly fine-tunes pitch location left, right, up or down with a simple turn of the wrist, and the machine's description calls those patented micro-adjustments. Pitch type, speed and location are three settings a coach changes independently, which is what lets one machine run a corner drill and a timing drill in the same session.

Jugs' current BP3 page does not state that, so we are not claiming it. What Jugs does publish is that changeups are thrown at the push of a button using the handheld remote. If automatic sequencing is the feature you are buying, ask us to confirm it with Jugs before you order.

Jugs states the BP3 instantly fine-tunes pitch location left, right, up or down with a simple turn of the wrist, and its product description calls these patented micro-adjustments. Jugs uses the Pinpoint name for the equivalent system on the SP3, where it is described as horizontal and vertical adjustment for black-to-black accuracy.

The changeup: only the BP3 throws one, by remote, with no cue for the hitter. Speed floor: the BP3 runs 40-90 mph, the SP3 runs 25-90 mph. The BP3 also carries the large LCD display, and the SP3 carries the Pinpoint name on its location system. Take the BP3 for hitters who already time a machine well; take the SP3 if one machine has to serve every age group in the program.

Both throw remote changeups. The Changeup Baseball is a single-wheel machine at 75 lb. running 15-70 mph, with fastballs up to 70 mph and changeups as low as 44 mph, and a published 64 in. delivery height. The BP3 is a three-wheel machine at 140 lbs running 40-90 mph with 9 preset pitches including curveballs, sliders and cutters. Take the Changeup Baseball if the machine must be portable and 70 mph is enough; take the BP3 if the hitter needs breaking pitches at speed and a changeup inside them.

Jugs publishes no feed rate and no hopper capacity for the BP3. Automatic feeders are sold separately; ask us to confirm which feeder is matched to the BP3 before you order one.
